How do you configure the joystick correctly. I am finding the custom controls hard to understand due to multiple choices for the same action
Throttle Up
Mapping my slider gives j0_slider0
Throttle Down
Mapping my slider gives j0_slider0 and it also gets rid of entry on Throttle up
Throttle
Mapping my slider gives j0_slider0 and it also gets rid of entry on Throttle Down
Invert Throttle
Mapping my slider gives j0_slider0 and it also gets rid of entry on Throttle
***Which one do I use
Turn Left
Mapping my stick gives j0_axis_x
Turn Right
Mapping my stick gives j0_axis_x and it also gets rid of entry on Turn Left
Turn

I have similar questions. I'm finding the joy stick mapping to be a major head ache.

Hmmm...
Well, for one thing, map your joystick / throttle controls in the joystick column of the Options menu. Do NOT map joystick or throttle controls in the Keymap or Alt keymap columns (which should be considered to be for the keyboard and mouse mappings, respectively).
Scroll down the commands list to the bottom... that is where the axis mappings are... not to be confused with similar commands higher up on the list that are designed for keyboard / mouse commands.
You should use the axis for each function that you want to. It will vary from player to player, depending upon preferences, and what you have for equipment. If you have a basic, non-twisting stick and no rudder pedals... you probably want to use the keyboard for controlling the legs ("Turn left" and "Turn Right" in the Key Map column) and then use your stick's X axis for the Torso Twist and Y axis for the Pitch. If you have a twisty stick, or rudder pedals, then you have decide what you want to have control the legs ("Turn" in the Joystick column, and what you have control the Torso Twist.
Personally, as much as I want to use the stick on my Saitek X-52 Pro HOTAS, I have pretty much defaulted to using the mouse in my right hand, due to the current state of joystick support in the game. It is supposed to get better later on in the development cycle. So, for now, I'm using my mouse, my throttle, and my rudder pedals. I designated the mouse and axis assignments in the MWO Options menu, and designated the HOTAS button assignments in Saitek's SST profiling software.
For whatever stick or HOTAS you are using, do a forums search. There has been a lot of work arounds, etc. developed during the Closed Beta test phase that could be of further assistance to you (while we wait for improved support in the game.

Just use 'Throttle' if you want your throttle axis on your stick to work as reverse/x/forward, but be sure to add these two lines to your user.cfg file:
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0 //sets it to forward/x/reverse
cl_joystick_invert_throttle = 1 //makes forward work as forward

Leave this at default settings and just use the two lines of code above it, copypasta'd into your user folder in the game directory on your computer

Just like with the throttle, just use 'Turn', which will assign the axis to both directions

I would like to know, which specific program variables pertain to the naming conventions of the xml being used. Believe it or not I still use the Microsoft sidewinder precision Pro and would like to be able to map its functions to the game and the balance of them to the Belkin Nostromo N52 to save the wear on my keyboard. I have no problem with belkin’s N52 mapping utility. Help!

And if you want to use Y-axis as throttle (joy-UP- forward, joy-DOWN - backward, middle - stop)
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0.5
