Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,
(I am bringing this up, here, because it fits with the recruitment issues)
I want to address something I see as a real potential problem: people forming Clan units. Now, by Clans, I am referring to the BattleTech canon Clans (Ghost Bears, Wolves, Smoke Jaguar, etc., and anyone putting together non-extant Clans at this time), not the gaming clans formed for other on-line games. Here are the reasons why I'm bringing this up:
1) We don't even know if the Clans will be immediately playable once they're out, or if they'll be playable at all, ever.
2) It will be about eight months before any of the Houses will become involved in faction warfare against the Clans, AFTER the game launches, let alone the Merc Corps' that will not see action for at least fifteen months after launch. This presumes that PGI will be sticking to the time-line of the tabletop game, and the 1 day = 1 day time advancement.
What are you folks in the Clan units going to do until/if the Clans become playable? The devs have already explained that those mercenary elements that have a major impact on the story, such as the Kell Hounds, will not be playable because of their importance to the time-line; do you think they won't also do that for the Clans?
Are you simply going to remain within the Houses until that time; this would be best for you so you can learn to fight as a more cohesive unit with decentralized leadership?
Or, are you going to break out into mercenary units; you know the Clans despise mercenaries, right, equating them with Periphery pirates, right?
How are you guys going to do this? The reason I ask is there are an awful lot of folks going into "Clans", both canon and fanon, rather than into mercenary units, and I'm wondering at the thought process in play, here?

MWLL's Clan Wolf and my Ghost Bear Cluster are joining forces to be Illician Lancers Merc Corp. They are a minor merc corp in the universe that has been around since the Star League.
If the unit is locked, either way my unit will play a Merc Corp and develop our skills so that when we can join our trothkin in Ghost Bear, we will be at the right skill level to bring honor to Ghost Bear. Either way our Company will be called Night Howler Assaults after CGB's Beta Galaxy.

Periphery action begins in August, this year, where the Kell Hounds Mercenary Unit will engage Clan forces. First major invasion wave to hit significant Inner Shpere holdings will hit in March-April, next year, according to lore.
Just thought a few details would help the conversation.

Dunno. I think people are putting too much stress and deliberation into this "what do we do if we are Clanners" thing.
In +SJR+ we are waiting to see, not making too many plans yet. Although we are BTech fans, our team doesn't really care at all about reflecting canon in our game-play. We have been planning to run as a 'Merc unit, possibly as simply the acronym SJR or as flat out Smoke Jaguar Reborn, canon-heads bedamned. Smoke Jaguar Reborn is our name, has been for a long time, and we're not going to change it to fit in the shoebox of canon understanding.
We will decide what is best for our team, not our roleplay, and we will decide it when the time comes.When/if the Clans are released as playable, I can't say whether this team would go to them. If remaining Merc is a better choice for the team, that's what we would do. For us it's all about about gameplay first. (Look at all my contractions. OMG not a real Clanner.)

Not sure why this is a problem...if people are allowed to form mercenary units, then why can we not rally together our sibkin and form mercenary units to represent our respective Clans?
Doesn't mean we have to play as the Wolf Dragoons or Kell Hounds. Doesn't mean we are hypocrites because the Clans abhor mercenaries. It means we are taking what MWO has to offer, and molding it to our own preferred experience.
I guarantee you 99.9% of people on here understand the Clans don't arrive for awhile.
In fact forming Mercenary units with Clan members is the best route-it allows us to form cohesive units with our future Clansmen so we can make a smooth transition if/when the time comes. In the meantime we will be a ferocious force for hire in the IS.
Doesn't mean we have to play as the Wolf Dragoons or Kell Hounds. Doesn't mean we are hypocrites because the Clans abhor mercenaries. It means we are taking what MWO has to offer, and molding it to our own preferred experience.

CoffiNail, thank you for your answer. I was wondering how Clanners were going to do things with all of this time on their hands. I know yours is one possible answer, however, and it remains confusing to me how folks are putting together Clan units already, when the web site is MWO MERCS, and it's been announced everyone will start off in a House and then begin to break into Merc units at the right time. The latter is a natural progression, while the former is not.

It's because we do not have to follow canon, and some Clan teams have been Clan teams since MW2: 31st, MW3 or MW4:Veng. No one wants to change their identity simply because their faction isn't in the official timeline yet.
Besides, there will be a million Merc units named Aunt Teddy's Bra Boys or Clan Glowing Lion Frisbee. Canon Clans playing as Merc Corps pale in comparison. We'll all be playing a 'Mecha sim game - not all of us want to turn the sim into a RPG.

Also, exactly 30 minutes later at 2:45pm, Kyle posted a secure transmission that was removed later that day with no records of its deletion. The transmission was mostly random numbers, but with one possibly-sensible string at the end.

We in the Sea Wolves are playing a s a Splinter group of clan Sea Fox and since there is room for our unit to exist in cannon (barely) we feel its perfectly fine for what we are doing.

Besides, there will be a million Merc units named Aunt Teddy's Bra Boys or Clan Glowing Lion Frisbee. Canon Clans playing as Merc Corps pale in comparison. We'll all be playing a 'Mecha sim game - not all of us want to turn the sim into a RPG.
Oh man, if I weren't already committed to the Independent cause, I'd totally join Clan Glowing Lion Frisbee. Or Clan Bee-barking Dogs.

maybe a little of topic .....but, when and where did computer gamers start using the word "Clan" for their,.. well,.."Clubs" ????
Im sorry but it would not surprise me if it didnt come from Battle Tech or MechWarrior.
The first I can remember was these guys we all called Quake heads , then the Internet took off , and next there where Clans
popping up everywhere, ?? so any one know ?

OP: Difficult question to be sure. I'm taking a good look at this game, but I won't stick around if Clans are locked out for players. I also don't like the way how certain IS units are locked out either. It smells funny and I have a bad feeling about this tbph. Good thing that I have options and D3 is about to hit next month. I'm not gonna lose sleep over this, regardless of how this turns out in the end. I'd feel seriously bad for the 'Clans' that put their hopes up, just to be stabbed in the back when they realize that they have waited for nothing. That'd suck harder than a black hole.

We first used the word Clan to describe our group in Tribes, we were a competitive top ten ranked clan. But before that I hadn't seen the word used in association with a group online. But even tho I am a BT head I did not associate the use of the word clan with BT just a way to describe our group. Also being of Gaelic origin then the word also struck well with me.

I wouldnt worry about the Clans being playable , Im certain they will be, just not right away, it may take some time.
But then again if the game takes longer to come out, then maybe you would see the Clans sooner??????
