HI guys i really like mwo and i hope you can help me. I run mwo at around 30-50 fps and get fps drops every 30 secs -2 minutes and dont know why. im a computer scientist myself and wasted around 5 hours to solve this problem. Its funny i only have problems with mwo, other games like borderlands2, or dishonored run smoothly without problems here a short overview of my laptop:

graphics: amd radeon hd6990m
ram: 16gb
cpu: Intel Core i7-2760QM
on windows 7 ultimate

- tried ati drivers from 12.7 to 12.11
- made fresh windows and mwo installation
- no malware on my system
- power settings are ok
- directx .net framework etc all installed and uptodate
- tried many settings with catalystcontrolcenter
- gpu dont gets 2 hot (max 86 degrees)
- benchmark does ok (ex: 3dmark11 3539 points)
- as i know no driver problems
- doesnt mind if game runs fullscreen or not, vsync on or off etc
- tried custom cfg weith very low graphics settings(ran around 70 fps but still the drops)
- tried clearing mwo cache
- reinstall of the game also didnt work
- tried some other tools, boosting process via tskmanager etc... also didnt work

i really dont know what to do else, or what i didnt recognise to make it work...
heres my dxdiag:

The key phrase here is only having issues with MW:O and no other game. That's usually a dead giveaway that the issue is not client side. They're having a lot of fun chasing down all the problems with their netcode.

Also, you can get away with not posting a 100% full system analysis, you know. :D

Power Options, set to High performance

In the Advanced Settings of the power options, check Processor power management. Check that both Min and max are 100% for now, and system cooling policy is set to active (fan speed increases before CPU throttles).

Next, set the min/max to 50% and test.

Also, when the FPS drops happens, does it happen on your first combat drop or after you played for awhile? When it does happen, observe whether or not the harddrive light is going off/on.

jeah i also thought that its more or less a mwo problem and not on my rig, but im very curious and maybe other people have the same issues and someone reads this and finds a solution for his prob or knows one for my etc.
many guys ask for a full sys spec for better analysis =)

thanks for the tipps tarl, but i also tried that before=) its a very common problem that many dont know their rig has a performance mode and wonder why it is so slow on balanced power mode. the massive fps drops happen a bit randomly, but what ive noticed it happens the most when there is action going on. i.e. 2-4 mechs close combat, many missile volleys and so on. i ran gpuz with the log for a few hours with different settings and the only thing i found out that my gpu load sometimes gets really high for a vew seconds and thats exactly when the fps drops are. after a few secs its back to normal and repeats something between 30 secs and about 3 minutes. i havent noticed that its especially more when i play longer, or on the first match. i also thought mi internet connection might have something, but its a 35mb line and up and downstreaming and ping are ok.

Don't blame your rig for that. It looks more than capable of running this game without problems. As for the 4fps drop, I've had that lately as well as memory errors galore. Couldn't play jack. Some gent in here suggested to turn down the settings to low and work from there. That actually helped. Imagine my surprise after I laid down a couple hundred bucks on upgrades that should allow me to play on maximum settings. Ridiculous isn't it?

nono i dont blame my rig, im just curious what causes this. i know cryengine 3 and netcode are big troublemakers. jeah thats ridiculous, maybe play something else and in a few month that bad problems are solved? i have the same issues if i play with max or low or superlow-custom user.cfg its just anoying, cause i always want to play mwo and get frustratedf cause of the fps drops and leave and then again i want to play it ^^

If you're able and willing, you might want to do some testing. I'm currently trying to figure out which sliders and settings cause the system to go nuts.

Seems you're playing on a laptop/notebook, which probably overheats, which in turn throttles down performance to protect itself.

Current settings without crashes/glitches/fps drops so far (still testing):

Effects: Very High
Object Detail: Very High
Particles: Very High
Post Processing: Low (personal preference, don't like blur)
Shading: Very High
Shadows: Very High
Texturing: Low (Very High caused Memory Error, watchout!)
Environment: Very High
Anti-Aliasing: PostAA

P.S. Just hit the brickwall (memory error). After setting Texturing to Very High, first game crashed.
P.P.S. From the looks of it, you have to be careful with Texturing. I'll try to find out where the breaking point is.
P.P.P.S. Texturing set on High causes memory errors. Ticket is on the way.

Seems you're playing on a laptop/notebook, which probably overheats, which in turn throttles down performance to protect itself.

(nods) This is where to test and troubleshoot that, the need to manually throttle the CPU using the Power Options. Another user had run into similar issue with his laptop and manually throttling the CPU to a set amount cleared up the issue of excessive heat/throttling up/down issue he was seeing.

tried around a lot today and found something. it rly was something with the cpu load. the tip with the powersetting to example 50% didnt rly work, but i noticed that my graphics load didnt mess up that hard when the drops happened. so i monitored the load of each core and the fkin mwo just screws that rly up and doesnt split the cpuload to the 8 cores but making the load top to 1-2 and then they get hot and the intel-eist i think its called comes in and then the needed power gets drawn from the graphicscard for a vew moments and thats the problem. now im gonna look up to manually split the load from the game to the 8 cores (i know its actually just 1 ;) )

rly nice help from all of u people. great community, thumps up =)

Good to hear that you narrowed it down. I like Process Explorer when I am monitoring or need to change the affinity for a game. With Vista+ I do believe there is a way for the OS to do it for you at launch once it is setup.

I had previously observed though on my I5-3570 it is running on all 4 cores. I will check it again to see if anything has changed in the last few patches.

i finally got it working=) i made an extra powersetting via the energieoptions. set the eist off the graphicscard off overclocked the card a bit and the most important part as tarl mentioned played around with the powersettings of the cpu. i set it to 98% min and 98% max after some testing. dont know why with the other 2 percent(default 100%) the load sometimes on 1 core gets 2 high. i also played around with process explorer :) and with process priority etc, but that didnt make that difference any more. just the cpu power min98% max 98% did it for me. game runs quite smoothly with around 25-50 fps without that annoying drops.

Doing a search on your laptop (sorry this is usually one of the things I do first), that laptop has had several threads concerning the overheating issues, from SWOR, Diablo 3, TOR, etc. On many of them while playing they will see a "FPS" drop or BSOD.

And from reading several of the threads, everyone was saying it has to be overheating, either CPU or GPU but never saw any actual resolution even being posted.

Edit : Update at your own risk. Below is a thread where a bios update for Sager/Clevo Bios modified.

Searching for Sager model adds even more overheating issues.

Would love to keep this thread bumped since I'm having the same problems as well.

Not a computer scientist though :P.

thx for the input =) i knew the bad bios etc so that was one of the first things that i checked, i got the latest bios and ec officially provided that fixed the fan bug etc. i dont think that this is causing my problem cause as i know the cpu dont gets 2 hot and i dont have any issues in other games, like gw2, d3 and so on.

i think the main problem is that the devs put that all up on the cryengine 3 which is far away from being competent, and they have /had a lot to fix and optimize with the cryengine. dunno why they took it all because if you run something on a new software engine etc theres allways a high chance that you have major problems. ( i.e. barely playable cause of lags, fps drops, hitdetection, disconnects .. for about 3000 beta players, which is actually very bad) i dont think that they have the biggest team of devs, so finding and fixing all those stuff takes quite some time, but im looking forward that pgi fixes that.

@Mietze
I believe you have found a temporary fix for that. Saw you play 'lemming' yesterday and I figured, well, you sure can restart the client much faster that way :)

Exact same thing here, walking around the map shooting lasers and any kind of weapons 45-60fps, but as soon as a Mech comes in line of sight (doesnt matter how far away, so this is basicly a map-wide radar) my fps drop significaly to around 10fps.
I also have problems with the Ram overflow (someone ingame told me that this is a known issue) and I have to restart. after. every. game. because fps keep dropping about 25% for every game I play without restarting.

C2D E8400 @ 3,4Ghz
4Gb DDR2 @ 1333Mhz
HD6850 OC (as strong as hd6870 according to benchmarks)
2xHDD Raid0
Win 7 x64

drivers are up2date.
