Give it a shot, it is free to play and you really don't have anything to lose.
The best way to ensure that you don't get obliterated then go to the public Teamspeak server OR that one voice thing that MWO supports.
Everyone starts off green, hell I was very green when I started as I had not played any MW title before this one and I am sure I was very bad at the start.
Just stick in there and give it a shot, the community in game is not as bad as in the forums.
Good Luck

Absolutely terrified of this game

It is very liberating when you stop caring what other people think of you. That does not mean you become an a-hole, it means you develop a thick skin and the words of a person who does not know you has no effect on you. (Easer said then done) In the real world; life becomes better when you don't care when buddy on the highway shows that you are number One!
Now with the game, I was getting spanked... a lot, but not minding it. But in the last few days something clicked and I have been getting the kills assists and damage. Don't bother with looking at the kills, although nice, I feel the damage done and assists are more important than kills, it is a team game after all. I would like MWO to keep track of the assists and damage done.

Just play, it's a game. Who cares what any of these interweb nerds think. The only way you'll learn is by doing. Besides you can't be any more terrible then people already playing, I don't think it's possible.
