Look, I'm fine with mechs having hand actuators that eat up critical slots even if hands don't do anything in the game mechanically.

But look at the Cataphract. http://mwomercs.com/...y-screenshot-27

Look at its left arm.

The hand has a giant cannon slung under it. How in the hell is it supposed to ever grab anything?

That is all.

"hands don't do anything in the game "

Imo Mechs with 1 hand should have a +5% Salvage Bonus and Mechs with 2 Hands should have a +10% Salvage Bonus.

So far do they do anything in game right now? A salvage bonus would be nice.

We could come up with a nice excuse for this without too much effort, I'm sure. Maybe basic cataphract chassis are mass produced with hands and then some of them are adapted into 4X variants by the addition of the cannon after. The hand becomes useless, but removing it is just unnecessary hassle.

I'm not sure what canon says I don't really follow it, but I'm pretty sure the cataphract act earned the nickname "the Frankenstein of mechs" due to the fact that its made from parts of other mechs, so it's not hard to imagine that that arm with the hand was simply what they had to work with.

Anyway, yeah, there you go. That'll do ;)

the 4X actually does go through the 'hassle' of removing the hand.

the CTF-IM does not.

It could still use a club in that configuration... but yeah... that cannon blocking the hand's usefulness is going to bother me now.

I use my Hunchbacks hands to plink off fleeing personnel from the enemy's HPG.

Or when collisions come back in mechs with hand should be able to stand up faster as they can use the hands to push up on, or grab onto things. Getting up form the ground just half a second or more is very helpful

the amount of arm 'bits' (upper act, lower act, hand) should be factored into collision damage dealt/recieved, chance of knockdown and speed of knockdown recovery.

Why? try running about in a crowd with your hands stuffed in your pockets and it's fairly clear.

It would be great if it also affected how steep a slope you could ascend, as better limbed mechs can scale obstacles.

With this introduced we have the beginings of a collision-based melee system.

Isn't it because the left arm is off a Shadowhawk? The right arm and legs are off a Marauder.
Fluffwise the Cataphract was built by the Capellan Confederation from bits and pieces of other mechs because they had lost the facilities to build heavy mechs and they desperately needed to get something in the field as quickly as possible.
So they built the 1X out of Marauder, Pheonix Hawk and Shadowhawk bits.

If you are that desperate I don't think some engineer at the design meetings saying 'but it can't punch with it's left hand' is going to (if you'll excuse the pun) carry much weight.

The Shadowhawk has the med laser on it's (right) arm arranged in the exact same way.

Aren't the mechs with hands and arm actuators supposed to be able to PUNCH? I have heard of glorious Atlas pilots clobbering the circle-strafing Jenner in its head for mistakenly getting too close. A quick end to a little bug. Maybe a Cicada fits the analogy better. :(

They are supposed to be able to punch, pick up amputated limbs or uprooted trees and use them as clubs, wield close combat weapons, carry objects, or just make rude gestures.

If you could carry objects you could make all sorts of crazy missions where one side had to loot cargo containers from a supply depot while the other side defended or some such.

If I had the option, it would be the first thing I remove on every 'mech.

In TT there is nothing preventing a Rifleman, JagerMech, Urbanmech, etc, from "punching" with its gun barrells. Heck, in theory a Catapult can "punch" with it's box arms.

Art never drove game mechanics in TT (which, considering how questionable some of the art was, such as misplacing weapons, etc, this is a good thing).

Maybe if said mech with hands survives the battle to use them.
