If I remember correctly in past MechWarrior games the primary control (y axis on stick or mouse) has always turned the mech, while the torso twist was a secondary control (joystick twist or "a" and "d" keys (please correct me if these were my custom controls and not defaults).
I've tried rebinding the torso twist to the y-axis in MW4 and found that it is too jerky to use for aiming. In MechWarrior Living Legends the primary control is the torso twist, and the chassis steering (legs) is the secondary function. In LL you cannot bind torso twist to keys, the torso twist is listed as "analog only", meaning it has to be bound to a mouse or joystick axis (and since MWLL only recognizes one joystick that pretty much forces me to play with the default type setup).
We've seen the default bindings and they show that the MWO control scheme is similar to Living Legends. This means to me that practicing for MWO is better done in MWLL than in MW4.
Now, if both torso twist and chassis steering are going to be viable choices for the primary control (i.e. horizontal movement when aiming) practicing in either will work because we will be able to configure the MWO controls to match what we are accustomed to. This seems like the best option to me, make both control styles tuned to be fully viable and let the player decide which to use. I'm not saying to change the default, just to be sure to make Torso Twist controllable via the "a" and "d" keys or any other control type (pedals for me), and make sure that the chassis steering is tuned with using it to aim in mind (not jerky, smooth subtle aim with progressive turning speed via mouse or joystick).
