Expecting a large portion of the player base to use out-of-game resources is unrealistic.

In-game tools to help you be a better commander and teamate:

"Y" team chat, use it during the countdown to lay out a general strategy.

"B" the battlemap, can be use to issue visual commands and waypoints on the map. (NOTE: people discount the use of this tool in favor of VOIP, but a good command will use B often to watch enemy movement and organize attacks and defenses, and once commander skills (like airstrike) are implemented those commanders will be well ahead of the curve).

Icons: if you look at an ememy mech and it has a triangle outline, it means no one is targeting it, and likely not shooting it. If you can target the enemy with a solid triangle, you can quickly focus fire. Of course the damage glow is there as well.

VOIP is nice, but not essential. the biggest benefit it offers is the ability to form teams, the actual communication aspect is secondary.

I use all of these tools, but in order to type or use the battle map, I have to be not shooting, and not evading enemy fire/LoS for several seconds (longer for battle map). This is a large impact on the team. I generally pilot a medium so that the impact from loss of my shooting is less than it would be if I were driving an Atlas, for example.

I agree completely. Everytime someone says "Just get on teamspeak!" I think, wow, you're really missing the point. There is no reason this game shouldn't have voice chat comparable to Crimson Skies 2, which was on the original Xbox in 2003.

I'd also really like it if you could see all the details about weapons and stuff when you're in mechlab, instead of having to go wander around the internet looking stuff up.

I think both these things will happen, in time. The game is very playable, but it's still a long way from finished.

The latter is already showing up- mwomercs.com/forums/topic/66994-have-you-seen-new-mechbay-stuff/

It does irk me that a game that is so dependent of good teamwork doesn't have an elegant, automatic VOIP comm for teams like they used in Battlefield 2 (probably the 100th time I've mentioned this in the forums).

And we can be pretty much assured that by the time MWO 2 comes out, it will also have an elegant, automatic VOIP comm for teams like they used in Battlefield 2. ;)
