The search function here is terrible and I cannot find things in patch notes so maybe someone more up to date with the game can help me.

I understand how critical hits work and that machine guns, flamers and the LBX10 do additional damage to critical hits on components.

I did hear in a thread that now this critical damage gets additional damage against the intenral structure.

Is this true?

Also since lasers are damage over time and have lots of tiny little attacks effectivly, does each small damage done in the chain of damage have its own critical chance to hit? I would assume so but was wondering.

STJobe is the best person to ask.

Some quickies: All weapons do additional damage in the form of critical hits. They can do 1x damage to components, 2x, or 3x. What makes those listed weapons different is that their percentages of getting them are significantly higher which results in more frequent criticals.

As a NON-REAL example that is to simplify this, (I know this isn't exactly how it works but a simplified thing separating it into simple steps) let's say we have an AC/10 and it's got a 30% chance of getting a critical. Of that 30%, let's say 20 of it will get you a 1x, 7 of it will get you a 2x, and 3 of it will get you a 3x critical (30 damage). Say you got the 3x critical hit, you'd do 30 damage to that equipment you hit (bye bye heatsink) and an extra 4.5 to the structure (14.5 damage for an AC/10).

Continuing that NON-REAL example... Take an LB-10. It's been buffed by the PGI miracle buffing service as a crit-seeker. It now has a 50% chance. Now you fire, and there's 10 little bullets of 1 damage each. Guess what? Each one gets its own 50% chance. And when you fall within that, 30 of it is a 1x, 15 of it is a 2x, and 5 of it is a 3x. Now let's say 7 of the 10 shots got criticals. 4 got 1x, 2 got 2x and 1 got 3x. Now we gotta track all 10. The 2 unlucky ones hit the center torso and did regular damage (armor). 1 hit a sore spot but didn't get a crit, only 1 damage. 4 hit and got 1x crits, doing 1.15 each (4.6 damage) to the structure and 1 damage each to up to 4 different pieces of equipment Then the 2 that got 2x did 2 damage each to the equipment and 1.30 each (2.60) to the structure. That last lucky guy got 3x. That's 3 damage to equipment, + 1.45 damage to the structure.
Recap: 1 to armor, 2 structure no crits, 4 structure 1x crits, 2 structure 2x crits, 1 structure 3x crit. 10 bullets.
In total that's 11 damage to random equipment, 2 damage to armor, 9.65 damage to structure. Despite the scatter that's 11.65 tangible damage + 11 more to equipment in a weapon only meant to do 10 damage.
In comparison in the extremely unlikely example provided above, if all 10 pellets got the 3x bonus as the AC/10 example did, it'd provide 14.5 damage to structure, and 30 damage to equipment.

Where it matters is that the LB is much more likely to get something with each shot, where the AC/10 might get a 1x crit once every 8 shots (random example not actual math)

Short answer: "Yes it is true." It's 15% of the Critical Hit damage gets transferred to internal structure.

Truth be told I'm not entirely sure how it works for lasers; we had a speculation thread about that recently as it is NOT explained.

As with most things in MWO No Clear cut single concise explanation has been given on this. You have to gather data from multiple patch notes, dev posts and twitter feeds to cook them together into a possible conclusion which will probably vary based on what truly happens.

Yes. We had some real confirmation of this a little while ago.

Lasers check for crits every tick (but do that ticks worth of crit damage, so, a much smaller amount).
