I'd like to suggest that when a mechanic for forming / joining a unit within the game comes along, that the unit tag is automattically added as a prefix or suffix to the player name when they join a unit / faction / merc coy /whatever.
My thoughts would be that;
1. Most players like to be identified with their unit (though possibly also an opt-out option for those that don't) and they will be asking for unit tags.
2. If automatic then does not have to be a manual name change task for GM / moderator everytime a player joins / changes a unit.
3. Automatically removes the unit tag if a player leaves or is removed from a unit, avoiding a disaffected player trying to damage the reputation of a unit after departure. Yes this happens.
4. Avoid possible issues with names / changes to names already being used as a unique identifier for players within the system.
5. In programming terms the unit tag would be stored in a seperate field to the player name in the players database. The player name and tag would be combined (PName) +(delimiter) + (UnitTag) when names are to be displayed in the game interface. The (delimiter) would classically be the '_' underscore char but any character not allowed in names or tags could be used and may be helpful for stats gatherers and such.

Automagically add Player Unit Tag to name.
