XL engines are lighter tonnage wise, more expensive, and create more critical slots in your torso's which means if your left or right torso are blown up your engine crits and you die.

I have a founder atlas, I'm open to any recommended builds.

Simple.
Strip off the LRM 20 and all it's associated ammo.
Upgrade to an Endo-steel chassis.
Add 1 more SRM6
Get up to 4t SRM ammo and at least 4t, preferably 5t of AC20 ammo
Add AMS and at least one ton of ammo
Add heatsinks til you can't anymore.

And this with mech that moves about 55km/h?
sure.
i would rather lose that SRM, remove LRM, and add 2 x LRM 15's, then you can still soften up your targets from range, until closing up on them and kickin'em around with AC/20 and some med lazors.
This way you can spam some damage when team scouts for you, and when you are at close range (read: out of LRM ammo) you can still cause some serious harm with those lazors, and AC.
Just imho.
But, up to you and your playstyle lad.

GET CASE
4ML
LRM20
SRM6
Gauss with 3+ tons of ammo. CASE goes here
From there you can upgrade to Double heatsinks and cram as many as you can in. DHS in engines however are apparently broken so you might be able to fit more SHS with endo. I'm not sure though.
Strip some armor from arms/legs because nobody ever shoots them on an atlas EVER.
I can't post my picture because the forums won't let me.

This.
AC/20 + SRM's + Medium Lasers is a fun, nasty combo.

Bcause gauss is just flat out better at almost everything. Slightly less DPS for more ammo per ton, MUCH better range, no projectile drop, less crits, and nearly 0 heat. AC20 ammo also explodes while only the gauss rifle itself has that issue. You can't take an AC20 with an XL engine while you can with a gauss.
Downside
1 additional ton
All of these things outweigh the additional 5 damage from a slow moving AC20 round.

Works either way, really.
For long range, Gauss + 2x LRM-15 + Medium Lasers. Or Gauss + Large Lasers in the Arms + LRMs.
For mid range, Gauss + Large Lasers + 1 LRM / 1 SRM. But mixed range builds suffer at either range against a dedicated build, naturally.
For brawling, AC/20 + SRM's + Medium Lasers.
