Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Heavy and Assault mechs seem to dominate the game so much right now. They can bring more weapons to bear, more easily. They can take a lot more damage. Yes they are slower, but the way the maps are designed it's hard for a light mech to really use their advantage of speed. The maps pretty much funnel the players together until it becomes a slug fest. All mechs can get a spotting bonus (from my understanding), the smaller, faster mechs should be able to do this better, but that really leaves them very vulnerable. There is no opportunity to plan with your team. The best strategy is to get in the biggest mech you can, and hope that the rest of your team did the same, and then out last your opponents. You get more of a damage bonus doing this, you are more likely to win. I do like the spotting bonus, but it really is not enough to justify using light mechs. They have no way to jam other mechs' sensors, or weapon systems. There are too many mechs on the field to get out maneuver one assault for long enough to kill it. I don't think they add enough to a team's composition to make them worthwhile to play. This could be fixed with some different tech, and the chance to plan a strategy with your team, or some other way. I just hope that mechwarrior can finally get away from the 100 ton slug fest (don't get me wrong, these can be a lot of fun) mentality, and have some more strategy in the game.

You are incorrect. Many medium and heavy mechs can field nearly the same firepower, but with some manuverability. Especially as things like the highlander and cataphract make it into the game. I run atlas with 2 UAC 5s, 4 MLAS, 2 SSRM2. I run centurion with 2 UAC5s and 2 MPLAS. Pretty close to the same damage output, especially since the UAC5 does around 20 damage a second when using 2 of them. But I've also run cent with gauss and AC20. It's very doable to put damage on other mechs without being an assault class. I tend to sit around 600-1000 damage a match with the atlas, but I'm still around 400-700 with the centurions. If you're not sure where your niche is among the giants, I would recommend finding a group. I know grouping is pushed a lot here, but when you join a chat you can chat about which mechs fill which roles best and how to use them. I never piloted mediums until OB, but I'm having a ton of fun (but I still bust out the atlas every 10 matches or so).
Cheers, hope to see you in game,
Kurshuk
