I know it's just not me... controlling mechs with the new GUI is a challenge

configging a joystick only complicates matters

I think (therefore I AM) it would be in the best interests of new players,
as well as returning Vets like myself, just to have a practice field
to work out the bugs in controllers, as well as controlling Mechs, themselves

Jumping into a game, AND trying to sort out the various idiosyncrasies of Mech movement
just doesn't work.

Pilots Die.

(because someone like me gets stuck in a hole, and can't find their way out)

Yup, had some kids in my Net Cafe, try the game. They were completely discouraged. The game needs a practice map, with obstacles, maby some moving targets.

Most people are in agreement with you, and I believe that the new player experience is one of the many projects that PGI is working on improving before launch.
