Weeks after misleading lots of fans by announcing that MWO was going to be released on xbox (its not), IGN released their impressions of the MWO demo. While mostly positive and excellent for the game- somebody goofed. Below is the full quote:

Quote

Iconic heavy mechs like the Titan are immediately recognizable, and look fantastic as they splash through rivers or pound the earth of the mountains.

Unless they are referring to a prototype SL mech, a post Jihad SL mech, or the Grand Titan (a clan invasion era mech), IGN is confused.

I like IGN - but they need to get a different reporter to give MWO decent press coverage who is actually a fan.

As stated elsewhere already, despite the reporter being unfamiliar with the franchise, what IGN reported on MWO was overwhelmingly positive. They might unable to differentiate between Atlas and Titan, but they had only good things to say in topics important for potentially new players (admit it, all it took to get most of us hooked was whispering the word "'Mechwarrior" :P). And it's those new players, that look for a visually appealing f2p game different from everything out there, that we need for this game to being a huge success.

No I agree that the good press from them is excellent - and it's a minor detail. But this isn't some iphone app game. Its a excellent looking, high powered entrant into a storied franchise that is getting the B squad from reporters. It would be like a review of a new star trek game talking about how excellent all the star destroyers look. It's sloppy journalism is all I'm saying.

You are correct in saying that it's important for new press to be good so that new players enter into the universe. However, wouldn't you rather them not be confused and post a thousand threads asking "Where is the Titan?" or "Why was the Titan renamed an atlas?"

This game will be confusing to new players as it is. We don't need sloppy journalism making it worse.

Yeah and PC gamer members are idiots. I lost a lot of respect for both them and IGN today, lol.

True that.

To give another example: Before the release of WotLK a german gaming mag (PC Games) made a preview of the Deathknight. They wrongly stated that only the Blood-skilled Deathknight could tank, and that took hold on a lot of players. Took a very long time to convince those players otherwise.

They said it looked bland.
they said it needs more "colors"
If they want more colors they can go play Minecraft some more. That's all those bums play anyway.

WOW you "like" IGN? Not a very good site, in my opinion.

I like IGN for providing me news about games. I don't read often enough to catch things like this but my opinion is definitely on the downswing. Believe me I won't get offended for badmouthing them. They are just a brand name I know like PC Gamer

They got some other details right, though. I noticed the Titan/Atlas flub, too (someone's confusing their mythology!)

These items stuck out to me:

Quote

Water will also cool your mech's heat level if you strategically place your heatsinks on your legs, and can make the difference if you're fighting on a world with many shallow bodies of water.

and

Quote

How a mech looks matters, too, because what you see is what you get. As fans have come to expect, every mech is extremely customizable, with adaptable weapon loadouts and accessories to suit different play styles. If you're fighting a Hunchback with an autocannon jutting out of its shoulder, you'll be able to tell just by looking at it. What's more, you can then target specific parts of that mech in order to blast away that troublesome limb and all its armaments.

On the flip side this means that placing your weapons and accessories on specific parts of your body makes a huge difference. The reason for this is due to the fact that your arms can aim and fire independently of the rest of your mech.

These seem to suggest three things:
  • Heat sink cooling in water is going to be a more detailed affair, not just wading in up to your ankles and dumping massive heat.
  • We will have a large degree of customization (in terms of assigning and locating weapons and equipment, at least.)
  • 'Mech appearance wil change depending on where equipment is located.
Of course, after the Titan/Atlas goof-up, I am lead to question the rest of the article, but those seem like some clear hints towards what we can expect to see from the mechlab.

Yeah it sounds more and more like a full mechlab is coming our way. I personally am not a fan, as limiting us to canon variants would eliminate boating complaints but what can ya do. They've gotten everything else right thus far - I can trust them on this as well.

I agree... sloppy journalism is just aweful. I just evaluate the positive reports higher than how accurate the information is (only in this case, not in real life affairs!). Interested players to be will have a look at this site anyways. Here, they'll find out that IGN wrote some nonsense. And let's not forget that IGN is a heavyweight in gaming journalism, especially for young people... favourable reports about MWO will reach tons of people, attracting tons of new players. MWO, being a f2p game, will need every single player willing to spend some bucks to be successful.

My honest opinion about all these gaming sites and magazines is, they're all crap. They have to sell ads, so they need to have titles and topics that have "epic" written all over. I don't like this type of journalism, it isn't appealing to me. I don't even like typos in an article I read, not to mention incorrect information. I can see where you all are coming from with your complains about the sloppy research done by the IGN reporter, and it gets me, too.

The author made an additional error:

"Ultimately, the goal of a fight is to kill the other team (called a mercenary group)..."

Which is incorrect, because teams are formed into groups called Lances.

Well I think the reporter was referring more to battles for planets between merc corps. Like instead of the red team and the blue team, there are mercenary corporations. However, that is a very limited assessment (not including houses etc) - and is just another example of the poor journalism. If the author spent 5 minutes on the site reading the FAQ and looking at the media section, this article would have been fine.

While IGN certainly made some errors in the reporting, it's hardly a fail. If you take time to read the article, it has more info on the game than any article I have seen yet.
There's is a ton of really good info, I suggest everyone take time to read it.

I did take the time to read it - and the info is not as good as you'd think. I will direct you to this article:

http://massively.joy...warrior-online/

That is far better written and has more information than the IGN one.
