The only thing to keep in mind is that you need to stick the CASE in with the actual gauss rifle, not the ammo. The weapon is where the criticals are, because the ammo is non explosive.

The difficulty with arm-mounted GR on mechs with XL engines. Can't put CASE in the arms.

Case wont save you from dying with an XL engine though. All it will do is save you some cbils on repairs.

This is what Lawler was saying, except that he is pointing out that the C-Bill savings can be worth quite a lot.

If you CASE your side torso with an XL engine and lose the ammo in that torso then you are dead, but if the damage from your ammo goes to the core it will do more damage to your engine, possibly your gyro and anything else that is in your CT. The more damage that your engine takes, the more it costs to repair. Just losing the engine to damage to a side torso is bad enough, but total destruction of everything else can be much more painful to the wallet.

Having said that, I can rarely afford the space for CASE when I am running an XL engine, but I do understand the advantages it can bring.

Just think

"Warning: Internal ammo explosion, detected"

God I can't wait for the Betty voice overs in our mechs!

WTB Betty! Miss that Startup voice. First 8 seconds of linked video, if you don't know who Betty is,

As for C.A.S.E., worthless if you run an XL engine with Inner Sphere Tech. Depending on mech choice/ammo placement, might be useful for you. My Commando-2D has all the ammo in the CT and Head, so if it gets hit, I'm screwed anyway. On a Hunchback-4G, with all ammo in the RT... might have use. Your milage may vary, as above posters have pointed out.

So, if I put the SRM or LRM ammo in the legs without any CASE?
Is it necessary for the AM ammo?

If you have Ammo in the limbs (like Arms or Legs) technically the explosion blowout should not be affecting your torso or other leg. Many people (especially LRM boats) like to store ammo in their legs, as the two slots become redundant once you upgrade to DHS.

One thing I thought was always interesting is that there is a chance to hit other components, but I do not know how it works in MWO. Case is built in like a DHS or module (in the loadout) but I do not think it works like an extra internal component that has a random chance to be hit (like a weapon, DHS, ECM/BAP).

Right now. I don't use CASE at all. No Repair bill after all. That's right I'm exploiting the system! :)

not sure if this is a true statement.

I know for a fact that damage is transferred to the torso when you fire on a destroyed leg. (left leg to CT, right leg to RT)
If you fire at a destroyed side torso, damage is forwarded to CT
If you fire on a destroyed leg, and the connected side torso is destroyed, damage goes to CT
- tested all those items myself

Since side torso damage on explosion forwards to CT, my assumption would be that also leg explosion forwards to side torso (and to CT if side is gone) I did NOT test that though

imo, reason for storing ammo in legs is
a ) they are more durable then torso locations
b ) the side torsos are additional buffers (if my assumption above holds true)
c ) the two slots become redundant once you upgrade to DHS.

edit: added reason C from above post, which indeed is a very valid reason

I generally like to stuff my ammo in my legs. Almost nobody tries legging an assault mech.

Says you. It seems I shoot for the legs when I get hit by the Atri glitch. Was on team speak in a three man when I was told I took out a Atlas by blowing off both his legs. Also CASE is your friend, I think I have gotten half my kills from people not using it. However I have never noticed a ammo explosion in my limbs, also I rarely even get ammo destroyed , even when I`m hauling 4-5 tones of it.

Hmm I thought ammo explosions do not spread to different locations, except if it one adjacent side is completely sealed off, (LT-CT-RT) maybe I'm mixing it up with some old TT stuff and maybe they decided to do things a bit more interesting in MWO.

I liked to think of ammo explosions that the energy of the explosion goes into the direction of least resistance, except if a large area is blocked it will also suffer a large impact of energy.

Hmm, I always wondered about those official TT designs with both XL engine and CASE. Seemed pointless to me, but I guess it kind of makes sense in the repair and salvage point of view.

I could quote it directly from a book, but...

In the case of an ammo explosion, your whole cockpit goes in flames and you go with it, Std or XL.
If you have CASE, you loose the mech, but get out on your own feet.

Double Necro! It's the Thread that Will Not Die!

But yes, CASE + XL will kill the 'mech but save the pilot. Not very applicable to MWO, but very important in BT campaigns.
