Outside of the MechWarrior games, my interest in BattleTech begins and ends with the fiction, including sourcebooks and novels (I guess spinoff computer games also count). I've never played the original TT game.
It's the same way with Warhammer 40,000 (although with that game, I have the excuse of not wanting to pay an arm and a leg for the miniatures).

Anyone else into TableTop games just for the fiction?

I don't tabletop, but I love me a strong, immersive universe with lots of unique/relevant lore and memorable characters. I like to lose myself in the fiction, you know? I usually play games for the story. Except for this one; this one I want to get into because I played it as a kid and want to run around in a giant walking tank again, for old times' sake.
But yeah, one of the #1 selling points for me in a game is the strength of its fiction. It's gonna take a long time to wade through all this BattleTech stuff, but it's fascinating enough that I want to keep at it.
Try to ignore the flashing "N00B!" sign above my head.

Tabletop / PnP-RPG.
I was unfortunate enough to grow up in a place where nerddom weren't appriciated so I never had the oppertunity to play such things.
When I got older and happened to play Vampire: The Masquerade together with my ex-lover and friends, it was one of the most boringest things I've ever done.
BUT, I still believe in that it could be done well and I have this huge desire to create anything from long campaigns with important characters to short ones that will last for one evening. I want to create memorable things. I lack friends for it though even online friends. That is my issue. Of course I talk about stuff outside of Battletech mainly as my knowledge of Battletech-RPG is extreamy low.
So my answer is, I guess I love it.
Because I love to tell a good story.

I enjoy playing the table top game, but it was the writing of the source books and novels that made me love it.
The same goes with other FASA games. Most of all Shadowrun.
West End Games had the same immersive draw for their star wars RPG.
Dead Lands also has a great setting that draws you in. Well the original version of it. It's gone through changes over the years. That is the only one that I never got to actually play.
