My usual type of play is a long ranged damage dealer.

I like being a sniper in FPS' or a ranged weapons guy in medieval games or MMOs.

Now I see that missile boats are being thought of as cheesy since the latest patch, I don't want to jump on a bandwagon, but I grinded up my CB's and wanted to buy one since it represents my favorite style of play.

Is this going to be looked down upon? Nerfed into obscurity?

Thanks!

The AC2 a great sniper weapon too. you may want to look on at before you buy something.
Long range and fast firing.

problem right now is that PGI swings between OPing weapons and Nerfing them. Who know what will be good in two weeks...a month...a year. It is honestly a crap shoot. So just buy what you enjoy driving and fight on.

I believe LRMs are part-and-parcel of BT / MW universe. By the mere fact that you have counters like ECM and AMS in the BT universe don't make LRMs the end-all solution in the battlefield.

Though people are arguing that LRM's are broken in MWO right now; the devs are definitely working to balance it out eventually. So go ahead and LRM all you want; especially if it fits your playstyle.

And this is coming from a pilot who doesn't use LRMs.

I'll take a look. Thanks.

Any other suggestions or thoughts?

they are going to hot fix the LRM, see below:

The latest patch (yesterday) changed LRM arcs substantially - something that was not noted in the patch notes. Can you confirm if this was a bug, or if this is intended LRM behavior? If it is intended, what is the counter supposed to be? Cover - even tall buildings or cliffs - is no longer effective in stopping incoming missiles as they simply fly over and then straight down on top of mechs.Edit

Bug. Got past our process, a failure. That is why Open Beta is so important we need to perfect our processes with a large player base. This should be hot fixed very soon.Edit

The cheesy bit is basically the result of LRM trajectory regressing to an earlier behaviour that largely invalidated cover. This will be, or was, hotfixed.

My suggestion to you is to play whatever you like. The C1 Catapult is a trial mech so if you want to check out how a fire support mech plays that's a good pick.

AC/2s, 5s, Ultra AC/5s, ER PPCs and Gauss Rifles are all good long range direct fire weapons if you do not want to use LRMs. That said there are several chassis that you can actually cram those and one of the lighter LRM launchers in just for that little bit of indirect fire.

use gauss/PPC/AC2-5. LRM's in MW are meant to soften up a target but in this game they are meant to wipe all traces of the enemy team off the face of the planet.

This isn't the kind of game where people look down on effective things, but one where ineffective things are looked down upon. Even if they complain here, in public, in the game itself, no one minds that I'm in a 20+ million space buck catapult mega LRM boat. You're in a bought commando? Well, enjoy getting leegged for being useless occasionally.

Play what you think is fun, and what you have fun in. Ignore the QQ.

Then join a group and multiply your fun by 100%.

Then join a unit (click sig) and multiply it by 400%.

1) Dont rush out and buy an LRM boat. There is a bug in the last patch, plus ECM is still being released. LRMS will not be amazing like there are right this second.
2) If you like to really snipe...LRMs are not the equivalent. You want a Gauss Rifle, PPC, or ER PPC. Those are good sniper weapons. Gauss is by far the best of the 3 options.
3) If you want to play a sniper, the Dual Gauss Catapult-K2 is an obvious choice. You will hear lots of good and bad about this build.
4) There are also other options. I like more well rounded sniper mechs. Currently a Catapult-C1 with 2 PPCs for sniping, and 2 medium lasers and 2 Streak SRM2s for close range defense. Also since the C1 has jumpjets unlike the K2, it can get into more advantageous locations.
5) Prior to Open Beta, I also enjoyed a Dragon with a single Gauss and LRMs.

Feel free to PM me with detailed questions.

Ill give you an honest answer, just play the way you want to play; you dont need anyone elses opinions. If you like doing the sniper role, go for it!! :D Each team needs some long range support, so sure you will be adding value to your team!

LRMs will always be a good weapons platform for the support player. A Catapult is never a bad investment.

LRMs will be brought back to a state where you will have difficulty hitting targets that stand behind walls and cover, even if you have a friendly spotter broadcasting their location... but that's only fair. We can expect a future attack-angle window of anywhere from 40<->70 degrees relative to ground, but 90 degrees was an obscene programming error. I bet it was simple as just a 1-digit typo, but still obscene.

Edit: no hard feelings, everybody makes mistakes :D I meant technically obscene, not "deliberately malicious and vulgar"

Stick around, next week we get ECM and something tells me that will grant your mechs an equivalent to a snipers ghillie suit.

LRM boats will cry and we will all scream nerf the invisible Gaussapults!

AC2's are great for rapid fire long distance annoyance. Gauss Rifles are long range high damage weapons. Any mech with a ballistic slot can fit these atm.

Friend, the best advice I can give is play what is fun for you. If it keeps you playing and people here who cares what others think of you. As anyone with any mmo experience knows there are flavors of the month. Have fun with your flavor and if it happens to be op at that time dont worry just play.
