When it comes to builds, I just ask myself what role I want to fill or how to best utilize the strengths of the mech...then strap on weapons that best suit that role with the available tonnage.
That being said, I do like Dragons, and they are the epitome of mixed build designs...I think boating is so rampant because the mechs tend to have boating hardpoint configurations. Those mixed config mechs were esepcially hard to make strong builds with prior to the XL Engine and Endo Steel additions to the game. The tonnage gap between large and medium lasers or between energy to ballsitic is tremendous, making it difficult to sacrifice more weapons, for less heat and increased fire control fidelity, just so you can hit farther out...or sacrifice more energy weapons and decreased heat dissipation for those energy weapons, in order to mount one ballistic weapon that is prone to missing, with each miss hurting a lot if it provides high damage per round, or hurting less and less at the expense of the ballistic round being more and more anemic for all the extra weight.

Currently I mostly run a founder Cat with the same weapons layout but with an XL 300 and a couple extra jump jets. I've been running this since a bit after closed beta started. I'm a big fan of maneuverability and being able to be my own spotter. LRM's are currently one of the hotly-debated OP weapons and I could care less if they are or not. As long as I can keep running something that suits my play style and helps support my team to win the match, I'm happy.

no? well i suppose if you were into masochism then fair enough, play how you want. but for most .. vanilla .. in their gaming , winning and optimal builds and gameplay is the only way to go ?

You wouldn't need an optimized build if you weren't into masochism. Because "optimized ftom build" does jack and **** in a premade.

My current favorite Dragon is mounting 1 SSRM2, 2 LL and 2 ML with a 325XL, AMS (2 tons ammo). I do very well in it, but it may not be the mech for others.
My Cents are: 9AL-- L pulse laser, 3 medium lasers, 2 SSRM2s, 225 STD engine, AMS
9A-- 3 SSRM2s, UAC5, 2 medium lasers, 200 STD engine.
I enjoy all of these mechs and get plenty of kills with them and never fell like I am not pulling my weight in a group.

that would be a different kind of masochism being in a premade. Again it is up to the player on his choices if he is enslaved to a group mechanics or he wants to retain his freedom in choice and individuality. Different stokes for different folks

This is why i love my K-2 ppc sniper build. half of the fun i think people are missing out on is just to experiment with different builds. i guess they care more for there K/D ratio.

you laugh but you do no understand that every person you are with, demands that you act in a certain manner. Polite, Courteous, Civil. That is a group mechanic. That is the nature of being in a group, a culture, a community etc, You must conform to the group. As a lone Wolf you are not limited to that at all.
try thinking outside of the box instead of drone eh ?

I'm sensing some hostility.
I'd also like to point out that Streak Cats can't do jack to a 'mech beyond 270m, a range I can still engage at with 2xML. A 140kmh Jenner dictates the range of engagement, so...
(Plus any Jenner sticking close to a Streakpult isn't paying attention)
