I'm curious to know what this "heat glitch" was that they supposedly found:

He mentions a "long-standing heat related bug" - I wonder if the patch will address that, and what it really means. I'd like to see energy weapons viable again, there was nothing quite like a Warhammer marching along with it's twin PPCs.

Basically the heat generated from firing lasers with less than a second burn time (pulse lasers and small lasers) was actually LESS than it was supposed to be. The fix is going to increase the heat these put out.

Oh energy weapons are viable. Small and Medium Lasers are doing fiiiiiiiine.

ERPPCs, PPCs, and ER Large are on the Protected species lists, and the population of Large Pulse Lasers is about to get a kick in the shorts.

Large lasers are the most viable of the Large bunch, and therefore the most used.

I also pilot assault mechs almost exclusively (Atlases at the moment, though I plan to flirt with the Cataphract as well). I have found that '1.4 heatsinks' are not effective: the amount of space I lose to them, and the fact they can't fit many places (head, legs, CT) actually means I get more dissipation with single heatsinks + XL engine than I can with 1.4 heatsinks + standard engine. I had really been looking forward to the true double heatsinks, as they would have matched or slightly exceeded what I could get with singles - while allowing me to go with a standard engine for better survivability.

Examples of my situation are here: http://mwomercs.com/...e-on-my-builds/

Could you give some of your reasoning or examples behind how 1.4 heatsinks are actually better (ie you can get more dissipation with them, even with the space they use) compared to singles?

I've noticed the same thing with my planned Catapult builds. I've been looking forward to DHS almost as a weight saving measure - if I can get 10 DHS in my engine than I can drop the 5 non-engine heat sinks I normally carry, and add some ammo too. But at 1.4HS, I'd still need to grab one or two to make up the difference, and that two takes up more crit space than the 5 SHS I already have.

For 1.5 million, I'd rather take ES than 1.4HS.

As far as I know, it's that the heat value for laser weapons was interpreted as "heat per second" value over the duration of the beam. That meant small lasers, small pulse lasers and medium pulse lasers produced less heat than they should have produced.

So no miracle relevation like "OMG, we always meant that the heat value was meant for "firing it over 10 seconds at full ROF" or whatever we'd need to get some balance back.

That is exactly the case. And it is a fair bug: I wouldn't mind them fixing that, if it weren't for the DHS debacle. As it is now, it feels like a double-nerf to my Atlas that uses Large Pulse Lasers.
