Hi all,
New player to MWO, although I was into MW2/4 back in the day. I've been playing over the weekend in the trial mechs and find that even if I am on the winning team I get no xp or cbills. If I have a few assists or actually get a kill I still haven't acquired any. What am I doing wrong? Can I only gain xp if I own my own mech? Much thanks!

How do I gain cbills/xp?

You've got the answer, all I have to do is verify it: You only gain XP when piloting a 'Mech you own. Trial 'Mechs gain no XP, but you also don't have to pay for ammo or repairs.
Now, C-Bills...you should be getting those, it's the entire point of Trials- to use them to earn enough to buy your own.

Here's a screenshot of my stats page. Now that I look at it, I think I'm getting confused between Mechwarrior Credits and C-bills. What's the difference?

C-Bills are money you earn in-game.
MC are 'gold' you get by spending actual money (IE, dollars, pounds, euro, yen, etc, et)

According to your stats you are earning C-Bills at a pretty good rate - are you mistaking Cbills for MC?

You gain XP for specific variants of Mechs (say Catapult-A1). There's no Trial-Variants in the Pilot-Trees, so you don't need XP for those.
It could be argued (and is inside some threads) that Trials should earn GXP (General XP) used to unlock Module-Skills, but it's not yet decided by the Devs.

Ho ho1mes, as everyone pointed out, you can't earn XP in a trial mech - it's a feature of the game, to encourage you to eventually buy your own mech.
You ARE earning C-Bills, and you almost have enough to buy a Commando. I think they start at about 1.7million C-Bills.
MC is different - it is currency that you can only get by buying it with real money. There are a few things you can do with MC that you can't do with C-Bills. Here is a non-exhaustive list:

- Buy Premium Time (Increases per match C-Bill and XP earnings by 50%)
- Buy Additional Mech Bays for your Owned Mechs (You won't need one for a while, you have 3 or 4 now)
- Convert Mech XP into GXP. GXP is the most flexible - you can use it on any mech pilot tree skill, for any mech. Also you can use it on pilot modules (you can't use Mech XP on those).
- Certain Mechs will be available for MC only, the Yen-Lo-Wang is the first example of this. YLW Comes with a PERMANENT 30% C-Bill XP booster whenever you use the thing.
