If you wanted to make the absolute best 8-man pre-made team, what do you bring?

I'm thinking:

2 Jenners for scouting and harassment.
2 AWS-9M for fast cav brawling
2 AS7-RS for brawling
2 AS7-D-DC for LRM support.

Then watch a 5man Jenner squad just rip them to pieces... personally I'm hoping that we'll see more standard battle formations with an assault or 2, some LRM support, recon and a well rounded brawler group. But knowing competitive play it'll be boating of some form, whether weapon, chassis or stat (e.g. speed).

I expect people can lag shoot. Jenner squads aren't the be-all-end-all.

2 assaults
1-3 heavies
1-3 mediums (depending on how many heavies you went with)
2 scouts

I'm not sure which variants of which mechs they should be but it would probably be a bit more diverse. I'd have fun dropping with the kind of balanced team I like against your 2 jenners and 6 slow stompy assaults, even more if you threw in XL engines to be less slow in the stompy department.

Other than gausscats, there's nothing that most heavies and mediums can do that assaults can't do better. AWS-9M if you need cavalry, AS7 if you need firepower.

In particular, the AWS-9Ms are *not* "slow stompy" but hit near 80 kph. They're cavalry, so meant to respond to enemy movement long enough for the brawlers to get there.

Without weight-class limitations mediums are particularly poor, maybe other than using cicadas for your scouts, though Jenners do that a bit better.

I personally think 8v8 with no limitations at all is a cluster-f*** waiting to happen.

Maybe so, but we have to work with what we've got, not with what we wish we had, right?

Current gametype will not be the only one... If the current one even stays in at all...

1 mediumish to guard the lrm and sniper
2 forward brawlers

Yea but still isn't what small groups of players want, I think a battlevalue, or even the first steps of their skill based matchmaking system HAVE to be included into phase 2 8v8 matchmaking. Why... because otherwise you'll have unbalanced teams that would abuse mechanics for easy win's (8 Atlas, 8 lights, etc...), or you'll have teams that aren't as tactically adjustable as the hardcore merc units who'll just stomp over less skilled teams.

Really needs to be a means to balance out the matchmaking, just making it a general free-for-all above 5 players is just asking for some solid backlash from the merc based players, and will devolve some smaller unit's into 4man perma squads. We'll have to see how the conquest mode will work, but I can see myself not impressed with phase 2 until the 12v12 is actually implemented with much MUCH larger maps.

FTFY.

Seriously, when they get the latency and hitbox issues nailed away for good... this will never be a winning strategy against half competent assault pilots.

Oh, and before I forget the general thrust of the thread: Some people load up a non-scout medium because they're confident in their ability to take down the automatched medium and then back up the heavies/assaults.

Just because you can run with 6 assaults doesn't mean that everyone else will oblige you with their team builds.

Phase two removes weight-class match making for pre-made drops.

Heavy reliance on 2 XL awesomes to get in close could be asking for trouble. Good teams will have multiple people hitting them on the same side torso till engine death takes them down. Likely to happen faster than the RS duo can come to bear for at least 1 of the XL awesomes.

2 of each weight class because I have pilots trained for those specific roles. Enjoy the QQ.
