I know this doesn't have anything to do with MW:O, and there would be, of course, huge copyright issues with the actual company doing it, but hear me out:
There should be a Paradox-style BattleTech grand strategy game, along the lines of the Hearts of Iron or Europa Universalis series. Maybe these game engines could even be modded by the community to produce a legal version. I really think the BattleTech universe lends itself perfectly to this kind of a game. If you've never played a Paradox-style grand strategy game, the basic idea is that you are in complete control of a nation's military, economy, and government at the macro level.
So, the way this game would work is that each player would see a starmap of the Inner Sphere, with their territory highlighted. They would be able to move regiments of BattleMechs and other types of units (Hearts of Iron had pretty much everything, for example, infantry, mechanized infantry, marines, headquarters, air cavalry, etc.) along jump lanes. They would be able to assign canon (and probably non-canon) characters as leaders of various units (in HoI, it was historical leaders, like General George Patton, etc., here it would be, for example, General Nondi Steiner, or Marshal Jackson Davion) Each planet would generate a set of resources for the player; in HoI it was manpower, metals, rare metals, oil, electricity and supplies. Here, it would probably be something like manpower, supplies, technology, high technology, and raw materials.
But the real beauty of this game is that the mechanic of conquering, annexing, puppeting, and rebelling provinces/planets is perfect for BattleTech. The Federated Suns takes a chunk out of the Capellan Confeeration in the 4th Succession War, what happens? It can release the St. Ives Compact as a puppet or liberate it as a free state. The Draconis Combine has high internal dissent? The Free Rasalhague Republic declares independence. Same with the Filtvelt Coalition. There are literally dozens of major and minor states within the Inner Sphere that have or are either waiting to declare their independence. Maybe you could create an independent Skye, if you really hated the Lyrans, or maybe you could fracture the Free Worlds League into a dozen puppet states. And then the Clans! Tons of opportunities there.
I've gone on too long, for those of you who have played these games, what do you think?

There could be a place for such game, but let's face it, Paradox are the only ones which could do that and that would require making them join our cause.

Emperor of the Fading Suns comes to mind. Though it's a civ style game (or rather, Civ/MoO hybrid), and the universe is only bit similar to BTU (Fading Suns universe is bit like Dune meets BTU meets elements of WH40K universe). Might be the closest thing to Strategic BTU game in existence though.
It's also a game with more potential than what it really achieved. There are few extensive mods out there, but haven't played them a lot.
(Edit) Some screenies from Moby Games:

you could just rename and reskin the units in the old game.
