I will try to describe or maybe record some movie.
I have Cicada, 2xMedLasers and Endo-Steel
so [structure] occupy most of slots.
if i took off ML from center torso, there are no free slots (all occupied by [structure], but i can put there two SmallLasers.
(structure will move in another places?)
and then if i save mech setup it says something about invalid equipment (i can't replay that situation). i had to quit the game.
After restart, i had nonchanged setup, only bought new stuff (new Small Lasers)

I have had the same issue with my Cicada as well as my Commando, seams to be related to the older issue of the mechlab not saving correctly, I can always tell when it is going to be an issue because the camara does not pan out correctly and the mech info pane of the hud disapears. if I change to the pilot tab it will not show that I have any varients owned. then once back in the mechlab it will now show eather my Commando or Cicada. have to close/reopen and redo whatever changes I have made. (happens more to me when adjusting armor values).

I got the same problem when I tried to mount 1 Streak SRM 2 and ammunition in the center torso on my Commando. Got the same error message and then my Mech disappeared from the garage. had to restart the game to get it back.

Yes. The structure slot is pushed to another location. Check your legs to find where the endosteel or ferro-fibrous crit-slots end and empty slots continue.

If the [Structure] or [Armor] slot is WHITE then it's "moveable" and placing an item on top of it will auto-move it to an open space. Now, if the same [Armor] or [Structure] slot is Orange then it CANNOT be moved.
This is a bit confusing at first.
Also, the "empty mechlab" and some of the mechlab issues mentioned I've submitted a ticket about and they've responded by stating "We're aware of the issue and are working on a fix".
