Because AFAIK some of the locations are that considered "cockpit" and not center torso are extremely small and unintutive, like the atlases eye instead of the whole head.

But most mech's it's pretty obvious (or you learn from shooting them there). The Atlas is easily the most difficult to head shot from my experience, followed by the Commando and Jenner.

You can see the hitbox in the mechlab as you pass the cursor over the area.

Raven right at the dark place above his beak.
Commando is difficult. Catapult aim right above his main windscreen.
Dragon try to shoot down on him right between his "shoulders"
Awsome the same is very vulnerable from above.
Cicada right "IN DA FACE" cause of its protulsed Cockpit especially vulnerable to spreading weapons like SRM, LBX and so on.

Only an overheated mech is a good candidate for a headshot.

That is not accurate on some mechs. The Atlas, for example - it highlights the whole head, and it is now just the left eye. It did used to be larger, though, so for some mechs you may be correct.

I have not seen a guide to this effect, but let me put it this way: there are only two mechs currently where shooting for the head specifically is worth it:
Catapult - its right there in the front, pretty easy to see (and hit, if you are careful). If you have precision weapons this can be a viable counter to LRM or Gauss cats, unless you are being fired upon (because of cockpit shake).
Awesomes - It is the upper middle of the torso, so you often get headshots on these without really trying. If you want to, though, just aim a bit up from the very center of the torso. I only find this doable with lasers, and at fairly close range.

Cool, thanks for the info, and clarification.
