Just curious- how many days does it take to take a mech down with an AC/2?

Never used it. Someone please educate me on its uses......

It's a weapon that fires twice per second. Damage is all about the volume of fire with this weapon, not how much damage each hit does. DPS is equal to an AC10 with much longer range and a faster projectile making it easier to hit with. Only downside is the heat generation.

Heavy screen shake, very fast rate of fire, very long range.

The AC/2 has an incredibly high DPS and quickly chews mechs apart when they are exposed. The alpha strike is low, but the sustain damage rate is nuts.

AC/2s are by far one of the best (if not the best) ballistic weapons in the game right now. The fast rate of fire also knocks an enemy's screen all over the place (currently going to be nerfed....with good reason). The extremely long range is also very nice for shaking/damaging LRM boats and other snipers.

Love these guns, very useful and very powerful. Just beware that you will chew through ammo very quickly. Most effective builds I've seen are:

HBK-4G - x3 AC/2, x2 1Mmedium laser
CFT-4X - x4 AC/2, x2 Medium Laser (or small laser)
CFT-4X - x2 AC/2, x2 AC/5 (or UAC/5), x2 Small laser
CDA-3C - x2 AC/2, Small laser (or Medium Laser)
DRG-5N - x3 AC/2, x2 Small laser

It depends on what 'mech of course.

The AC/2 does 2 damage per hit, and fires twice per second, for a total of 4 DPS.
So let's say you need 33 damage to kill a 'mech (you're a dead-eye shot, so you fire at the head; 18 armour and 15 internal for a total of 33).

33/4 = 8.25 seconds of continuous fire to totally destroy that head (you'll likely kill it faster, since after 4.5 seconds you're through the armour and have a 42% chance of critting something that kills the 'mech)

Now DUAL AC/2s... *evil grin*

It's got nice DPS, but unless you're really good at tracking and leading shots simultaneously (or you're opponent is really close) good luck focusing you fire. I think of it being more of a fire support weapon, peeling armor off of the torso in general with good efficiency, good range, and shaking their cockpit constantly in the process. I'm probably exaggerating the aiming issues, but if you want something for getting that kill shot, you'd probably be better off with a slower firing weapon.

Hence why I run x2 AC/2 and x2 AC/5. ;)

I think of this gun more used for causing some pilots to kinda panic. They come around the corner, hear the wicked booms, hear the mind blowing rate of fire, see their damage screen flashing everywhere, and their screen is shaking like crazy. They often **** at least long enough for you to move. Add to that the not too bad damage and low heat. Even one ac2 can be worth it sometimes!

the sound and the shaking does cause panic

for the one firing dual AC2's with lousy netcode and weapon convergence on a fast moving not too far away target, the rapid fire enables you to literally walk the shells to target. This is a huge advantage/workaround

Like the posters above said, an AC2 boat is a terror weapon. No one wants to be on the receiving end of those guns, especially if it is a Cataphract with 4 of them.

Boating. On a Dragon 5N, load triple AC2s for 12 DPS at 720m.

I wish I had the Cataphract with 4 ballistic hardpoints so that I could boat 4 AC2s...

I'll pick that up when they release the Blackjack

Personally I'm enjoying my Raven 4x featuring a single AC/2. While i'm out there on the fringe of the action passing along targeting information I'm using the AC/2 to flush people out of LRM cover. When things get nasty I actually try to time my AC/2 shots to the opponents reload (cause i'm usually pretty low on ammo at this point in a match) to get that screen jostle and hopefully buy me and my teammates more time.

I put one on my yen-lo-wang as part of a zombie build - its just fun to circle and **** enemies off with the ac hits and the screen shake :) You find out it draws attention to you and collapses the defense so your team can close in and win while you provide a distraction

Screen shake at AC/2 fire-rates is horrendous to receive. It's an alternative to LRMs for fire-support, shooting near cockpit means explosion clouds in their faces.

AC/5 is better for damaging moving things, less heat, more damage, but slower RoF.

AC/2 is when you want the opponent to know you hate them at 2 rounds-per-second. AC/2 has 4 DPS non-stop, and high heat over time.

Suppression.

It can really panic people with the amount of fire it puts down field.

Use it a lot and you can get good at plinking heads.
