You'd win a lot of arguments by being able to tell people you can strafe in quad mechs.

Oh yes. I would definately want to see them. I still remember toying with a Tarantula in MW2: 31st.

It had jump jets. Does that make it s jumping spider?

Yep. If anything, lateral shift movement means a quad could circle-of-death pretty darn good.

You can strafe in bipedals, as well - after a fashion...

The Stalking Spider (picture I posted above) has jump jets. And it moves the legs to stabilize itself as it goes through the air, so it looks like it's crawling in midair. And it would be awesome to see, if it eventually got put into the game

Hmm.

It's said that both the Scorpion and Goliath are pretty rare in 3025, due to being unpopular for the rough rides.

I love quads, but I'll agree that of the two, only the Scorpion is of any interest to me. The Goliath is horribly undergunned until the Gauss rifle variant comes out during the clan invasion.

I'd say it weren't worth the programming effort until the universe reached 3060

Quads got hosed in the latest rule set anyway, not too worried about them being in the game.

How so?

Last I checked, they could fire while prone without any gunnery mods - that makes them a great option for a sniper unit.

That, and no PSR to stand? You could just plop it down anywhere and it's like it's sitting in light woods. With C3 networks, you can hide behind level 1 hills or in sub-1 divots, becoming an impossible-to-hit spotter... And -2 to all other PSR checks? If it weren't because it were made for Mechwarrior 4, I'd be surprised that the Fafnir with it's dual HGR wasn't put on a quad chassis to prevent it from falling on it's keister when firing unbraced.

I've tried to do the Quad version of the Fafnir, it doesn't work, you run out of crits for things like the Endo-Steel or FF armour you need to get the weight for the HGRs. (or Heat Sinks if you try to reduce the engine)

As to the main topic. I wouldn't mind seeing quads in game, but as has been mentioned at the launch of this game there are only 3 Quad mechs that had ever been designed in the Sphere: The Scorpion, the Goliath, and the ancient Age of War Xanathos. When the Clans show up they could add the Stalking Spider, Fire Scorpion, Thunder Stallion, and Snow Fox (which I would pilot in a heartbeat).

Therefore I'm betting if there's any actual coding changes that would need to be done for quads, the effort needed would probably not justify the effort needed.

OH, and I disagree that dog legged mechs necessarily look cooler than More equine or "man in horse suit" legged mechs:

As has been stated, in 3049 you have two options: Goliath and Scorpion. The Xanthos is a 26th century Capellan design that was extinct by the end of the 2nd Succession War in 2864 (per TRO: 3075).

That being said, the sideslip option is pretty cool... I don't know if it's worth losing torso twisting. I'd jump in a Tarantula after its debut in 3054.

One of the thing about Quad Mechs that always got me was their ability to be stable fire platforms for heavy weapons for long range fire (sniping). Although that stability came at the cost of a rough ride when moving faster than basic speeds and a decent torso twist. This type of mech is ideal for ranged support, but up close is vulnerable to being flanked by faster mechs.

Being stood still (or moving up to 20% speed) would infer a boost to lock on and weapon accuracy, as well as increased fire stability when under fire (reduced mech shake when taking hits). Just an idea.
