We'll find out with the next Developer Update
I'm saving up for a Blackjack BJ-1. Shall be my next Mech to try.

On the NGNG podcast #68, Bryan Ekman let us know that the order of release for new 'Mechs will be a medium in May, a heavy in June, an assault in July, and a light in August. He didn't specify which 'Mechs those are, but being that there is only one already announced medium, the Blackjack, I think it's a safe bet that it will be the one we see this month. The Orion should be after that. Then we have a yet to be announced Assault 'Mech in July, and the Flea in August.

I thought it was a picture of something else but it looks very interesting. With a good paint job and not pink, the blackjack will be very impressive.

Looking forward to running this thing with a gauss and two medium lasers with JJs+masc+biggest XL engine (shadowcat :)) when masc comes out.

I hope this mech isn't screwed by having a low engine cap. That would be bad!

Well, the projected engine cap for each of the Blackjack variants that are (IMO) likely to be available is 235 (~85 kph without MASC or efficiencies), vs the Shadow Cat's engine rating of 270 (~97 kph without MASC or efficiencies).

It would be pretty disappointing if you couldn't mount at least a standard 250 to avoid having heatsinks mounted outside of the engine.

With all of the likely (IMO) variants starting with a standard 180 engine and the 1.3x multiplier for Medium 'Mechs, it seems unlikely that any of the BJ variants would be able to mount a 250 or greater (or a 245, or a 240)...

I imagine that there will be a lot of common builds between the BJ-1DB and BJ-3 (both are jumping energy boats), with the latter being more popular since it would have a minimum of one energy hardpoint in each arm and each side-torso while the former would likely have all of its weapons clustered in its (rather high-sitting) arms.

The BJ-1DC has the greatest number of minimum hardpoints (a minimum of eight - two energy hardpoints in each side-torso, one energy hardpoint in each arm, and one ballistic hardpoint in each arm), but is the one variant that is stock without Jump Jets (and so likely would not be jump-capable for MWO).

Finally, the basic BJ-1 carries a ballistic hardpoint in each arm, and an energy hardpoint in each arm and each side-torso, and is jump-capable as well - which also gives it substantial overlap with the BJ-1DB.

Each of the Blackjacks start with a 180-rated engine (Standard, not XL, is stock for all), giving them a cap of 235 and a base maximum top speed (that is, without pilot efficiencies and such) of ~85 kph.

Twin AC/2s come to 12 tons (without ammo).
Twin AC/5s come to 16 tons (without ammo).
Twin UAC/5s come to 18 tons (without ammo).

I expect a fair number of (relatively) fast dual- and/or quad-PPC/ER-PPC/ERLL poptarts and hill-humpers... :)

what about the BJ-2 ? is there some reason it isn't a qualified variant??

Quote

BJ-2 - The BJ-2 upgrade of the Blackjack upgrades the 'Mech with two Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Lasers and four Hovertec Streak SRM-2 launchers. This variant also upgrades the heat sinks to double strength versions. [note, the BJ-2 was errata'd to use double heat sinks by FASA Corporation after its release] BV (1.0) = 858[3], BV (2.0) = 1,148[7]

Really? I thought it was a not-so-subtle hint to the devs to make the damned Locust already. ;)

How did they go from this,

Posted Image

To something *yawn* boring like on the first page which looks like the *******-child son of a Cataphract that mated with a Jaeger?

It makes me sad. PGI needs to get way edgier in their artwork.

I don't know, but the Blackjack in general looks ugly. The new makeover looks nicer.

because that abortion looks horrible, like about 95% of the "proper" battletech artwork?
