Quote

"This could streamline the process. So you pay for the right to upload a decal, and if for any reason it breaches the terms of use, it can be removed without possibility of refund. Any decal in the available pool can be tagged to the player and time who uploaded it... and if a Merc Corp already takes a decal type, any attempts at mimicking it by a second Corp can be thereafter reported, and the second Corp will bear the cost of trying."

But that would warrant the need to Catalog ALL decal submissions for reviewing purposes otherwise someone may pay to upload and then find it is already in use, or close enough to warrant removal without compensation.... that would not fly very far or straight...

Or you're told it's too close, resubmit a new design.

Yup. Have it as a dropdown menu or something, and all successfully submitted ones will appear there. :D

I mean, you're not going to pay for something you can get for free right?

A decal editor would be great. It gives your mech that feeling of uniqueness. Something like what armored core had where you mixed and matched backgrounds, colors, and symbols would be nice.

After paying to upload it? Surely, one of us is missing something here....

Yeah, I wasn't implying you'd have to pay AGAIN. You'd still have paid, you just couldn't use your first design and would have to submit a new one. You'd have a "voucher" or whatever.

Or you could always go the route of paying to upload something it goes through some automatic filters, and if it is later reported (validly) you get it yanked with no compensation.

You may have a ***** logo for a day, but in no time you're lacking logo and out the money.

Making decals? That's a great part of other games like the ones in the Armored Core series.

Hell YES to having a decal creator feature in game or maybe something similar to MW4's decal folder that is synched with other players. The worry back then was people creating nudey decals and inappropriate content. That did happen but, as history proved, 99% of the decals were fine. Since MWO is F2P with alot easier access by masses of new fans and causal players, there will no doubt be more of that.

However, this *is* a vanity item and PG could charge for every decal uploaded. Id pay $5US if I worked hard on a unit decal and I wanted to upload it so it was available to my lance mates.

But they have already said there will be no decal uploading ability much less an decal creation tool built into the game. I only hope this is something they can address after launch. As it stands, we have camo variations that we can play with. Lets see what that looks like.

I would personally like to see a set of shapes that can be put together like COD blackops. Though this would certainly cause trouble with recreating complex corp emplems and etc. As a result why not have both? For example if you wanted a complex corp emblem that you made using some other program you should be able to submit that to moderators and they will determine if it's offensive or not for a small fee of course and whoever submitted it could choose to share it with their corp, a few people, or the whole community. On the other hand if you wanted something that could be made more easily you could just use the assorment of shapes they provided to make your own for free.

This is a very good idea!

Take a look at how they do it in EVE and make something similar. It should please most people.

That was largely what made me really like this idea in the first place. I was able to get a very good Blazing Aces logo in Black Ops just by combining the layers and I think a surprising amount of units would be able to get a decent logo up as well - if not for the specific Merc/Unit, one of their Battalion/Regimental flags.

Now we are doing Vouchers? Or something? You see where this is going right? If you allow uploads, you will have to deal with the BS folks will generate. You cannot ask someone to pay and then pull any decal if someone else finds it inappropriate. Lawyers would be all over that like feces on a blanket.

Because believe it or not, this stuff is copyrighted. Places like the US Marines can let games use their actual logos and often won't charge but the stipulation is it gives them total control over the IP, including the decision to have it pulled or make any change they want.

A similar recreation made in something like a decal creator by end users isn't a problem, on the other end of a spectrum. But yeah, they definitely won't include this stuff in anything made by PGI.

Even units that are no longer in service? Old/historical insignias?

So you would be OK with using a Decal/Emblem, from say a group, all lost on IWO Jima? Come on man.....

I think a decal/emblem editor for a game like this should be an obvious addition...

I'd love to see custom decals, but if people/corps are footing the bill for them, they shouldn't be open for just anyone to use.

In W40k dawn of war u got synced folder for badges on your PC, so you are breaking copyright not the company (if stated in their EULA)
