I tried repairing and not repairing, and haven't noticed a difference so far...

i did it once and noticed that my internals got smashed to pieces very easily.
my mechs internla structer was already orange and my wepons were stripped quite easily.

Are you sure that you repaired internals though? I always repair internals and they seem to be at 100%, at least visually...

Items will repair themselves to 25% for free and you pay for the rest. The problem with keeping your items at 25% is that a crit from any weapon in the game besides a machinegun will destroy them, and right now it seems like every shot fired into your internals is causing a crit. Be warned this is true of xl engines as well, and an AC2 to an exposed right or left torso can blow your engine.
