Are there any perks to picking a specific faction? I haven't seen any docs about selecting factions and when I try to do so in my profile it doesn't allow me to choose one. Anyone with a link or suggestion to how to accomplish this and what if any perks are awarded with the factions of choice.

AFAIK, faction selection is a feature that'll be rolled out in the future, something that'll play into the meta-game of MWO.
However, if you're talking about the "select your allegiance" feature in the profiles section, then that's just plain bugged as of now
. (As you can see, I don't have an allegiance yet either).
