Ok absolute n00b here -- other than having played Mechwarrior2, 3 and 4. I am trying to get used to the mechs again and configure controls to my liking. However I want to try walking around and doing a warmup without being a liability to my team. Is there such an option?

In MWO? No. There's no PVE nor instanced training grounds yet.

This has been a suggestion since Beta started, and nothing has eventuated. I agree, there needs to be a firing range of some sort. Nothing complex, just an empty uncomplicated map with static targets so you can test your weapons and heat buildup etc.
