Best Xl Engine To Buy?
#1

As we all know, XL engines are extremely expensive, so what would be the best one to buy?
Obviously it would need to give a speed increase to most of the mechs I put it in, but the idea is that I can swap it out to another mech. So what size is a good all rounder?
I look forwards to everyone's replies!

350 is for Cent 9Ds and Dragons
Personally the only one I'd buy is a 350, since there are mechs that come with XL engines in the following sizes: 255, 280, 300. Those 3 will cover almost all of your XL needs.

You need to consider the upgrades as well... perhaps the XL235 is the max weight that you can fit with you current build but getting a XL255 will free up 3 crit slots and might make the Endo Steel upgrade fit and that would free up the 2 tons that you need to upgrade form a XL235 to XL255.
Heat is less of a consideration for ballistic mechs so once you have an eng above a 255 its just going to depend on the weight so look for the right amount per ton... going from a XL300 to XL310 is an extra 2 tons but going from an XL310 to XL320 is only 1 ton.
I keep these eng in my bay STD 300, 350, XL 255, 280, 300, 325.

it will just shorten your durability...
avoid them in assault mechs (specially in atlas).

Engines are not "one size fits all" if you are one of those people who like to build optimal builds. I'd never use an XL engine on a Hunchback, for example, but I only use XLs on Dragons. It's situationally dependent.
If I had to pick one, though, I'd go with a 280 or smaller so I could fit it into the maximum number of chassis.

Some mechs and some playstyles lead to you getting cored quicker than losing your side torsos. If you have that happen a lot especially after adjusting your playstyle then you might as well run a XL for the weight savings.

The above fits both when talking about XL and STD engines. Xls can be really good to improve firepower, but you should employ them carefully, trying not to go brawling with them. Placing one in a Hunch imho is suicidal (usually 250+ENDO is the best).
275/280: Ravens, Cataphracts, Catapults.
300: Dragons, Catapults, Cent D, Jenners, Cicadas, Cataphracts, other lights. Stalkers do good with this rating, but strictly STD; I still have an xl 310 bought for them but it's now being employed in a Dragon.. XLs on this chassis is almost madness.
325: Cicada, Dragon, Cataphract, Highlander (Max engine rating for this, so it may be a good investment), AWS 9M (std).
350: Dragon, Atlas (sniper builds, but then if you really want to go with an XL, 360 makes the atlas much more move-able), Aws 9M.
I tend not to run xls when brawling, but sometimes if you use them with the maximum engine rating it can be fine (Ravens, Cataphract, Awesome, Cent D, Atlas) because of the extreme mobility given. Of course you may take into account that you may have a specialized engine not usable in other mechs or that's useless (xl 295 from a raven any 300 is better, xl 385 for the AWS 9M).

You do equip a Catapult or Dragon, all Light Mechs with XL engines all the time bcs your side torso wont get hit often, or if you be a long range support/sniper Mech that needs the spare tonnage.
If possible an engine with a rating of 250 or higher bcs it will carry the minimum of 10 heatsinks in it you need to operate your Mech and for each step of 25 above that you can add one more heatsink into the engine so you have extra room to place more equipment in your mechs body.
Imho the only way to swap the engine is to buy a 300er and switch it between some Jenner, Cicada, Catapult, Dragon, maybe the Cataphract or a LRM boat.
