What danged folder do they go to?

I don't think the game has a screenshot function yet.
Download Fraps and let it take the screenies for you.

MWO can not create screenshots by it self. The only function build in the game now is to show the FPS. You activate it with the key "F9".
If you want to make screenshots you have to use another tool for it, like FRAPS or "MSI Afterburner".

The above doesn't work beyond the launcher window, unfortunately.
I do suggest MSi Afterburner as it is free, and has almost zero hit to your FPS - even when using it to record footage in glorious 1080p, let alone passively to take screenshots.

Add the game to steam and you can screenshot with f12 easiest way to do it.

isn't that the thing where all your games, can be blocked to be played in an instant, by a single company, and you can do nothing against it?

Technically yes but only if you bought them through Steam.
