One: Being able to spend C-Bills to buy additional mech bays.
Two: Being able to sell your weapons and equipment without having to have a mech that is able to equip that weapon type. I have no ballistic hardpoints, but an AC/20 from a mech I've sold is in my inventory. I'm not going to use that weapon, but I'd like to be able to sell it and use the money for other things.
