Heres an old letter I found on a disc in my closet.
It concerns a Marik group I was a member of a long time ago.. some of you may remember the names.
COPY PASTE>
I think it ran along the thread of the best pilots? But I turned it into more of an accounting of members of the FWL who have stood out in my memory.
<Clip>
A long time has passed, and many mechwarriors have had their moments in
the sun.
This post is an incomplete listing of the mechwarriors I saw who gave
opponents a good run for their money during the history of our group.
My memory isnt what it used to be, and If I leave anyone out, it really
wasnt intended.
First I want to take my hat off to the people who were assigned as my
wingers.
You guys had your hands full, not only with the enemy, but also with me always charging recklessly into the fray, or shooting the fission
plants and causing nuclear blasts to cut short a few of the online mech 2 games.
Goon
Dude, If I wanted anyone on my team with an autocannon backing me up it was Goon.
He used to tear opposing mechs apart while they were busy blowing limbs off my mech.
Goon was an excellent lag shooter and ruthless in combat.
We had a falling out at the beggining of Mech 3 that never really got
resolved. Clashing of personlalities I guess.
AK 47
AK was a kick *** winger and an absolute riot on the field.
We used to trade jokes while we were fighting. (not an easy feat when
you consider we had to type everything in Mech 2)
I remember a fight in Netmech dos where we were both heavily wounded
and down to our last mechs.
After trading jokes on how badly we were wounded. (we had time because the enemy had respawned and was coming to get us)
We made a bet as to who would die first. (heh we still managed to knock out one of the bad guys)[fights were 2 on 2 ]
I think I won the bet [I died first]
Sharclaws
What can I say about Shar?
Hes one of those wingers that you never had to worry about.
Shar was like the main character in a movie. Ya know, the one who wades through the enemy like they arent even there,
coming out the other side of the mix with barely a scratch. I had great times in mech 3 running support for this guy.
Netdemo
I only fought a few of our members via Netdemo
Wlkabout performed my trial during this era and I remember our Nova
battle like it was yesterday. It was from that fight that I learned the value of Group fire. I also remember fighting his hellbringer in a maddog. Yes Wlk I know... lock on and fire over obstacles instead of running in front of particle cannon fire
I think I may have fought J roamer during this time, but the fringes of my memory are a bit fuzzy. J was a character and a pretty good pilot. I dont know why, but he reminded me of Lieutenient Dan in Forest Gump.
(shrugs)
One other guy during this era deserves mention. His name was Joker. He was a good friend and a hell of a pilot. If I remember correctly, he was a Drak before coming to the FWL.
Netmech
Dos and Win 95
The list during this time was long and A lot of good pilots arent going to ge the kudos they deserve here.
Ali (aka Cheekay)
Topping my list for memorable pilots was Ali. Ali was a TALON, that is, one of the elite pilots of Marik. More then a few times I ate AC 20 rounds from this guy while he laughed and easily dodged my Particle fire. (You should have heard me curse. Good thing voice chat wasnt a reality yet)
He was always fun to fight against and a few times I rolled out of my
chair laughing during battles.
Evul B used to kick in a lot of teeth during the mech 2 days. He was a reliable pilot and more then a few times we traded missile fire
while practice dancing with stormcrows. Someone mentioned to me that Evul really stood out in mech 3, and I have to agree. With his laser mechs he would get into the 'zone' and hose enemies down. Fighting against him, was always an adventure and pushed me many times to my limit.
Highlander (aka Berlin CB)
This guy was a prodigy, and in my mind one of our best pilots. He
absorbed material like a sponge and visited upon you 10 fold what you hit him with. I remember him telling me that he couldnt find any more pilots who could give him a good fight. ( I thought this was funny
A week or so after this conversation he disappeared.
Everyone must travel their own road.
Sombra
Sombra is another pilot that shone during mech 3 and made his mark
during mech 4. Sombra lumbering along in his Thanny was a welcome sight in any battle.
In one memorable fight, Sombras Thanny went over the hill after two
scats, and after killing them, came back with only an arm missing and some scattered damage.
I used to get an evil grin on my face when dropping with Som as my wing in Mech 3, because I knew the enemy was in for it.
Persistence and soul
Many of us are Marik at heart. Just from personal experience, I have received offers from other units to jump ship and sign up with them.
Sure it would have been different, and many of us need a break
sometimes, but there has just been something about this group of clowns that keeps me coming back.
A few of the pilots here have made Marik what it is, and impressed me
with their attitude and persistence in the persuit of excellence.
Deino
Blades
Motokai
Zoom (I even got a Club Z T shirt)
Zometta
Inglis
Don Esteban
Bumpo
Bludsport
Hawk009 (The real one)
Lucifer
Tarn
Tyr
DOA
IA
100 Faces
In addition not just pilots but leaders.
A few of the leadership deserve mention, not only for their ability to put up with a lot, but mostly for their organizational skills and
Tactical ability.
Wlk (early era)
Wlk created our group a loooong time ago. He always was cool and
collected.I always pictured him as a big dude with a square jaw and crew cut sitting in a dark office with a permanent scowl on his face.
Bogey (mech 2)
This guy stands out as an ideal. During his time in the sun, Bogey was a true leader. He was able to balance all the BS that came along and set us up for wave after wave of attack and defense. He molded Marik during the Mech2 era and Made our unit one to be
feared.
(I wasnt around during Mech 2 Mercs : (
Marte and EB (mech 3 & 4)
I cant say enough about Marte and EB. Marte's tactical and
organizational skills are no less then brilliant. In Mech 3 our battles with HD became the thing of legends, forcing HD to split into three factions just so they had the firepower to oppose Marik and its alliance with Clan Wolverine. EB ran our intelligence division, and diplomacy. I wouldnt have wanted his job
These two always kept me under control when I wanted to attack
everything in sight. I was like Khyron in Robotech (for those of you who are familiar) "attack attack attack".....I was the id, to their ego and superego.
Marte kept Marik alive against the entire might of the Draconis combine in Mech 4. Eventually the Draks quit because they couldnt
break us.
That was a good day.
Reinhold (Mech 4 mercs)
Pending heheheh
Reins doing a bang up job : ) From what Ive seen these days, running a house is more then just numbers. Its mainly diplomacy and alliances. <smiles> Hardcores like me would never survive in such an arena. Im too direct.
Current Pilots
Fox (aka monkey monkey)
Fox Is one of those pilots that you neve have to worry about in a lance. He knows what to do and when to do it. Sometimes hes a little reckless, especially when he sees red or gets the taste of blood in his mouth, but you cant blame him for that.
Cyberkut
This dude can shoot.
Dont give this guy long range weapons and expect to survive against him
I found an ancient letter on a disc covered in dust. It has an account of a few things from one of my old units. Some of you might find this interesting.
