We climb the mountain, which some people may say,
Are impossible to climb, but we climb it anyway,
We carry our pack and rations as well,
We carry our rifle and plenty of shells.
We climb those mountains tired and weak,
But we knew what we were after-
And that was liberty.
We dug out the enemy from dugouts so deep,
That they built enough beds for 12 men to sleep.
We listened to the artillery which sang over our heads,
To shake up the enemies which were so cozy in their beds.
We waited for the orders to go ahead,
And then we met the enemy that were so cozy in those beds.
We met the enemy thin, and thick,
But our minds were made up; we couldn't be licked.
We chased the enemy night and day,
Through towns and cities that were once so far away.
They stole buses, and donkeys and horses, too,
And any other transportation because they knew
We were coming through.
We marched over mountains and sometimes roads,
Then someone would ask us where we were going.
It was easy to answer, because our answer was always Rome.
When we reached the enemy at that ****** line,
We knew it was going to be tough, but we didn't have time to mind.
We hit them hard with everything we had,
And made sure the enemy would never be back.
It wasn't so easy, as you already know,
But we fought all the harder, and finally marched into Rome.
Now- if anyone asks us where we are going,
We'll tell them Berlin, and from there we're going home!

As a vet, all these well wishes bring a tear to my eye. Not for myself but for all those guys who gave up so much for duty, country, and family. Ive never met a better bunch of guys than the ones I served with. For everyone who posted on this board, who took time out of their day to appreciate your veterans, Thank you. You are why we do it or did it.

God bless and keep all those brave men and women that have given their lives for their country.
"Ours is not to reason why? Ours is but to do and die."
Sadly this mantra is as truthfull now as it was when first written.
I thank all Veterans alive and dead for their service

Thanks for leaving in the third stanza. A lot of people leave it out to give the poem an anti-war sentiment. In reality the poem is an exhortation for the living to take vengeance for the dead.

Once a year, we honor those who served. Many died to gain the freedoms we hold dear. Many died to to keep them. We took an oath to defend against enemies; foreign and domestic. It's the latter that worries me. With government growing ever larger and our personal and religious freedoms being attacked, including the freedom of speech, I worry that their sacrifice might be in vein. It is up to us to make sure that never happens.

From a transplanted Canuck in the US to the folks back home, "Lest We Forget" says it all, though as a kid you can never truly understand (even tough when not so much a kid anymore)
For all who have, who are, or who will serve . . .. "Salute" from a lowly civvie, words cannot say enough
