Just now died from a shot to the back when I still had armor left on all my back areas. It isn't the first time that it happened. Shouldn't happen devs, shouldn't happen. Not with armor still there.

Then email them and don't post here. You know they probably aren't perusing the forum a ton after business hours.

Could be the paperdoll update bug. Armor readout sometimes gets stuck and doesn't update properly. I thought my internals got destroyed while I still had armor but my spectating teammates said I had no armor.

Could be, but I doubt it. The other day I was in my Atlas, rounded a corner to run into an enemy atlas, and my right torso/arm vaporized in literally 2 seconds. Even with an atlas loaded with AC/20,SRM etc, I doubt he could have destroyed my (fully armored) right torso in one volley. It was the beginning of the match, I'd taken no damage up to that point.
As a constructive suggestion, they should add a "critical hit" message ASAP. Make it nice and obvious, so people won't wonder wtf just happened when they literally melt for no apparent reason.

Same thing happened to me, I was in a commando, stopped to line up a shot on an Awesome's center torso, and BAM! I was dead.

The critical hit % is too high. Should start at the high value (like now) but then REDUCE the % untill it no longer short circuits the gameplay by instant kills.

Critical hits don't cause your internals to take more damage from the shot. Only a random piece of equipment in that component gets hit by the multiplier.
As a side note, Betty will most likely be informing you when one of your guns gets crit'ed.
