Currently there is no way to determine (that I know of) the location of hardpoints on 'mechs. For instance, I had some bills to spend, and I decided to get another Atlas variant. My first thought was I wanted to play with a 4 PPC Atlas, so I found one with 4 energy hardpoints, and bought it. Turns out 2 of the hardpoints were on the chest, so I couldn't fit anything larger than 2 medium lasers there. That just wasted 9,000,000 hard earned bills. I see there are little graphical indicators on the models of what type of weapon is mounted there, but that doesn't really help.

Suggestion: include a small graphic showing the location of the hardpoints. I ended up buying every single Atlas with real money to figure out which one had the right configuration - ultimately wasting a lot of money.

Thanks,

www.sarna.net is a good place to start for now. There's also this thread in the General Guides forum: http://mwomercs.com/...s-excel-inside/

I believe PGI has said location indicators for hardpoints is a forthcoming mechbay feature.

And; why don't the visual indicators on the 'mech geometry help? They make perfect sense to me. If I know an Atlas has 4 energy hardpoints and the model looks like it has two lenses on the arms and two in the CT, then there's no plausible reason to assume that the Atlas in question is capable of mounting 4 energy weapons in its arms.

Sorry to say it, but it sounds like your money was "wasted" on your own failure to do the research rather than any shortcoming on PGI's part. I didn't know that forum thread existed until I went to write this post. It took me... about ten seconds to find.
