I own the PIP Zoom module and I find it moderately useful. Yes, it's grainy and makes the world look like vintage WWII film footage, but you can often hit better by using it. I think it should be better, however.
As I understand the issue, CryEngine cannot render a portion of the scene in a new window. It has to render the entire battlefield and then project it into the PIP zoom window.
One solution might be to have the PIP zoom show it's scene in wireframe mode. Most of the rendering resources are consumed with shading, shadows, textures, etc. The geometry transformation and clipping are much less resource intensive. This would turn the PIP into more of a 'computer enhanced zoom', but I think that would add to the immersion not detract from it. The central issue of needing to render the entire battlefield would still remain, but there would be much less for it to do.
