I've enjoyed both gametypes for years now, and probably prefer 3rd person as the competition level in those games are EXTREMELY MORE COMPETETIVE than most of the noobrushing 1st person games. Though to be honest, competetive games can be had in the upper echelons of team play regardless of view - its just a simple fact that the better players prefer 3rd person.
Noobrushing vs Stand Still engineless Poptarting if we want to get our stereotypes correct.
Competitive? There is/was no 3rd person Planetary league. FFP is a bid option in most ladders.

This.....could fix everything. As it only would exist on trials, add in a noob only (trail) match maker and it makes everyone happy.

We are not remote controlling them like a drone with a camera hovering on their backs to see where they are going. This might be a computer game, but the difference between playing a game and living the game is very big.
3rd person view will mean the end of immersion in the game.

NO.

I wish we had no option for it at all, ever, with the exception of a spectator view, but I really think that if it comes, even with the option to not use it, most people will use it as much as possible. Even those who cried loudly against it will still use 3rd person, I honestly foresee a stream of threads where people who play force 1st person view games will be called out as "bads" or what ever the nerd word of the week is, likely by people in this very thread.
That makes me sad.

PGI, the right thing to do is leave this alone and do not add 3rd person, if you do, you have done nothing but cater to a fraction of the community.
Lock this thread, say your sorry for even suggesting it, and never bring it up again.
n00bs need to learn how to torso twist like we all did, hell I did this on a keyboard ONLY back in Mech2/Kali days against others during house operations.
This is nothing more than excuse and a poor one for 3rd person.
Don't turn this into another MW4.

Reason #1 - Kills the immersion
Reason #2 - Massively increases people's FOV, meaning that situational awareness is far less important. It's also pretty hard to sneak up on someone who can see pretty much all around him.
Reason #3 - MWO just doesn't need it. It's development time that could be spent doing other things. It's not like there is a lack of features to be working on.
I am also not convinced that adding third-person to the game would add anything meaningful to the game.

It's players like you who ruin good games because you can't accept a game in it's current state or maybe the current state is just too difficult for you.
Lol? I accept the game in its current state as being unfinished, and I certainly have no trouble playing the game with success. Rather than try and push people down and undermine the credibility of their opinions to validate your own, how about you re-read your own statement when you said you are currently forced to play FPS right now. Giving someone an option to play from a different perspective at times is an option, you aren't being forced to do anything. You aren't even being forced to change to "stay cutting edge". You're forced to join groups and develop chemistry and team play and mature your meta knowledge as the game is tweaked and balanced and patched continuously. Please, son.

I'm thinking about life after MWO just hearing that 3rd person is a possibility.
I could understand using it for all of 30 seconds while a disembodied voice states in a training video, "This is your mech. Note how the torso is able to twist independently of the legs."
<Enable split screen, retaining 3rd person in the first half, with 1st person in the second half>
<Rotate mech upper torso>
<Move forward and backward>
<Move while rotating torso>
<Move forward, turn left/right while rotating torso>
<Shoot something while doing the above>
<End Training>
Beyond that 3rd person would completely destroy the feel of combat.
I'm a Legendary Founder. You already have my money. I've already spent more in addition to that. I will want ALL of those funds returned to me if a game-changing mechanic such as this is implemented as it changes the nature of the game at a very FUNDAMENTAL level.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you want a newbie coming around a corner and have a mech magically appear in a place where there was no mech before. Is this supposed to help new players or get them slaughtered?
So if I'm understanding you correctly, you want to support the ability to view your mech from some magical entity that exists behind your pilot and provides an omni-directional sightline? Is this supposed to waste time or just be more pointless forum sarcasm?

I do not want to see this game turn into nothing more than a bunch of mindless D.A.V.E's from Backyard Monsters running around all day, it would be such a dissapointment after waiting 10 years for the project to start up again and it goes against what I put my belief in when I supported this game as a legendary founder.
Edit - I have listened to the podcast twice now and though I know what they are saying in regards to bringing in more people and limited the view to help people that have never played this type of game I am a little less "Hell NO" but I am a advocate against any 3rd person but if it is limited to help a learning curve I can deal wiith it but if it becomes a game advantage I believe it will degrade this game faster than anything else that could be done.

What? The most successful competitive games are isometric currently. Before that I can't think of a single 3rd person game that topped FPS games in competitiveness. I suggest you actually do your researh before speaking up.
I was referring to Mechwarrior team/league play specifically, earlier versions of mecha gaming on the net. Sorry for not being clear about that. You're certainly correct in the bigger picture of gaming.

While the vocal community likely may not be the majority of the community, they probably ARE the people who will keep playing the game, who know the genre.... and why does this matter? Simple - their friends who know them who will want to know if a MWO is a good 'mech game will value their opinion very highly.
Who knows how many possible 'mech players each voice on this forum represents ...
Ah, the joys of trying to calculate things for profit.

If a new player needs to learn then give them a taining area. I agree with all the "no"s out there, This is not 3rd person shooter. Might as well add 'No heat' or make it 'unlimited amo'.
