Ahh......Russ announces 3rd person but isnt willing to give a new player there own "starter" mech..

One hugely unpopular concept and one hugely popular.

Screwed up priorities if you ask me.

I would assume the MWO developers would implement 3rd person the same way World of Tanks does it: If you can't see the target from inside your tank (1st person view) then you can't see it from outside your tank (3rd person view) either. Unless a team mate is spotting it for you.

Probably, but that is also REALLY confusing for new people, which they're trying to avoid.

It makes zero sense as a training tool. You dont learn to drive a car in the third person, you dont do anything in life in third person except out of body experiences. Flight simulators are all fppov.

Again if its only in trial mechs in trial mech only matches. PGI you will open a can of worms when these people start having to use fppov instead if tppov in non training matches. They will have to relearn how to drive. Step backwards imho.

Gears of War is actually a 1.5 over-the-shoulder view, not third person. I can't really think of a straight up third person pure shooter.. Team Fortress I guess?

Pretty much the same thing, the way I see it. Anything outside the cockpit is "3rd" person.

Then "they" are idiots... I'm not going to mince words on this.

Lets just speed it up and call it "Call of Warfare: Modern MechWarrior".

Lets not develop things that deviate from what sold well last release cycle, can't have our audiences learning about 'new things' and maybe trying them and maybe enjoying them, that would screw up the ability to tell them what they like.

**** innovation lets just keep chasing the endless "larger audience" until we are all stagnating in a cesspool of creative hegemony.

But what the hell right, at least we'll have the "largest" audience of dissatisfied gamers because not everyone has the same interest but there isn't much choice when all the games in town are the same ******* game.

*hyperventilating*.... wow, i apparently feel strongly about this.

Well said. See here is the thing. ******* off your loyal fanbase, who has already given you money, to MAYBE attract other players into the fold is not the best idea. In fact it's a very BAD idea. I've seen games fail do to this kind of thing. You can't make everyone happy but the people you should try to keep smiling are the ones who already are on your side.

Bang on! Consistency is key to learning. It sounds as if they are going to do it no matter what at this point, so all we can do, as beta testers, is leave feedback on it once they do. I'm not even sure there is a wider group to aim for, or even if there is, that 3rd person is even what would draw them in. Look at the mech lab for example, would the "wider" group find that "easy"? How many people are turned off by complex (or perceived to be) building options? I just get the feeling making it appeal to a wider group is less likely to result in more money, it seems to me the hardcore who love it will spend more. However I am no Dev, so what do I know?

You know more then the Devs, apparently.

I truly hope that 3rd person view never comes to this game. If it is in the mechlab, or for a replay feature I am fine with it, but for actual gameplay, never.

He's talking about the 3rd person view being a training camera. I'd be much happier with new players being able to use it for a bit in a few tutorial games before switching to 1st person when they want to compete in the wider meta-game.

If in fact 3rd person is to be used only in a training environment, I'll have to shrug and be fine with it. Looks and feels like a slippery slope though...

There are so many other things they need to work on / fix first.

1. Where the heck is my community warfare?

2. Why do we still have the "black screen" bug?

3. When is collision coming back?

4. Are they going to fix the hit scan?

5. How about the firing delay on ballistics?

6. Where is the "starter" mech you talked about for new players?

And more...

True, but new players in World of Tanks eventually catch onto it. No reason to think MWO players wouldn't eventually grasp this concept either. If they don't (in either of the two games) then they probably aren't the sort of players you would want in the community in the first place.

Hey I'm new and can't make the fingers of my left hand co-ordinate with my right hand on my mouse.

It's so confusing!! Looking one way and moving in another, simply blows my brain with the complexity of it.

I'll never walk again! You have confirmed how confusing it is! I'm about to petition the government to recognise this new medical syndrome.

Can you please break the game by putting in a 3rd person view. I know it will break immersion and possibly give an unfair advantage, but, well you know, I'm new and don't want to learn anything.

Just make it all really easy for me.

I also dribble a lot.

Thanks Russ!!

can you imagine what kind of crap this will be?
We already had this kind of argument and all 3 sides (1st person, 3d person and devs) couldn't come up with possible way to make it work (no advantages but playable) reducing 3d person fow to 1st person fow will result in warping around objects and mechs - kinda not what it is supposed to be. the only way is to implement classic 3d person and divide players by allowing them to chose what kind of matches they want to play - 1st person\3d person\mixed just like matchmaking will divide pugs\premades (which is kinda whsat devs are planning to do i fear). of course if we had like 50k+ active players that should not be a problem, but last time i checked there were way less people.

I'm actually fine with sticking to first person, but there is no guarantee that we will get that dividing wall in the future.

Edit:

I'll probably be happy if the game grows huge with the inclusion of 3rd person view, but I would definitely be playing less if I have to play with people who can switch out to third person and look around a corner to see if I'm there or to see if a scout mech is behind them. I won't hold it against PGI though. That's just how development goes.

For a free to play game, Open Beta is essentially launch anyway these days. The difference is semantics - well that and people can no longer hand wave away all the problems with the "it's beta" argument. Either way, it's sad given how little content we have at the moment.

The reasoning for a third person training mode is stupid too. New players have problems with torso twist and leg position because there is no tutorial period. Why worry about how new players don't understand basic mechanics before an ingame tutorial is implemented? Anybody can see that is the real problem.
