What would help new players even more than some 3rd view

* In game chat rooms
* TOOLTIPS
* Actual tutorial
* Stable game client
* Proper matchmaking
* Actually revarding tutorial mech function
* Rewards for good performance and not just winning

I could continue here for eternity but the 3rd view would be the last thing I would need to mention here. Stop accusing new players from leaving the game when actually there is 100x other things that drives them off even more.

I do certainly hope that the tutorial, tooltip, and in-game guides come out before third person. One can hope. :(

Where the hell did that $5 million in founders' packages go? They got funding from somebody to start this project, right? So the $5 million should have been on top of the check they were already cut. And they can't have projected a profit until after the game's release, so there shouldn't be any pressure right now beyond fixing all the issues that are going to turn players away. What am I missing here?

Game development especially for a AAA level title is extremely expensive. They have salaries, licenses to pay, taxes, rent, day to day utilities, Marketing and PR, their publisher takes a cut, and now that founders is over the only thing making money for them at the moment is MC purchases for mechs/bays.

100 billion percent this!!
This all will help more than 3rd person view and help new players become better players and not rely on a crutch to play the game.

i think 3rd person view is a great idea. think about all the people who usually play games on their xbox360 who are used to action games with 3rd person view. they will like this game so much more! and i also think mwo needs a cover system. like when you hit a button, then the mechs moves automatically into cover and then he raises his arms over the cover to shoot out of its cover. and we need archievments too! like "awesome! you managed to move forward! well done!" ...oh and health regeneration! we need health reg! so when you are in cover, your armor repairs itself. so yeah, give us a cool console game! im in for it... and my dog too!

I like you Onyx so i'll be nice. :(

My take on this is not just no but Hell NO!

It seems like a small thing but it really isn't for a number of reasons:
  • It breaks the pilot immersion "simulation feel" and would make the game seem even more arcadey, this is a problem.
  • Not to mention the changing the field of vision / POV changes how the game would be played, more general awareness means a less of a need to be cautious in moving and turning.
  • Creating a situation where 3rd vs. 1st POV would be unnacceptable and further dividing the player base would be equally bad - you would end up with 4 population segments: 3rd person pug/3rd person teams/1st person pugs/1st person teams
  • The game needs to survive and thrive on it's own merits as itself, there's a lot of people calling for X change because it would "appeal to a larger audience" but if we make those changes the game won't appeal to many of us. A good tutorial and sand box would be better to bring new players in than a 3rd person POV.
so yeah that's how i see it, technically it might be a "small change" but the impact on the game and community would be much larger.

Ha ha, sorry I missed your "Poke" the other day, I didn't realize I'd left TS on all night and you were gone by the time I saw it.

Anyways...

Those are all valid points, and I'm inclined more towards the no 3rd person view then I am towards allowing it, especially given the overwhelming response against it. When it is on such a massive scale (Like the God-Mode LRM mass QQ we recently had), I think it is generally best to yield to the community.

But I personally don't have an problem fighting against people using a 3rd person view. Sure some really good pilots will take advantage of it, but I think most of the time it will be used by the less skilled pilots, especially given the core community of this game and that kinda balances out any advantage the 3rd person crowd will have a lot of the time. Still the same mechs and weapons vs each other so ultimately while it may be more challenging to fight a really good 3rd person view pilot...I'm ok with that challenge...I'm kinda surprised more mech pilots aren't considering what masochists (love pain inflicted on them) many are in this community LOL.

I'd be ok with third person being available to spectators, or maybe even as a (very expensive) module, but for general play?

No... just No.

You have an issue with the 3rd person camera?

->>>> http://mwomercs.com/...34#entry1419834

Give this idea a read through, maybe it pleases you and something positive and contructive can be worked out.

Bashing and flaming helps no one!!

So we are going to have a magical flying camera behind our mechs, but we still don't have radar that can see behind us?

Silly.

That comment makes me want to pull out a Wang. :(
YES Obligatory Wang reference of the day achieved... ooh two in one.

But the point is as absurd as [the quoted 'idea'] sounds it's not far off from the effect [3rdPV] would have on the existing community. I mean look at the poll, the last time I saw a poll with that many votes that lopsided it was the "Dear god don't go to open beta poll" before it got deleted in a tragic post merging accident... (RIP awesome poll), but that was an argument we won far to briefly and OB was delayed for a couple weeks at least.

And someone already pointed out the uproar over the LRM incident, you have to consider that if this is representative 90% of current players are adamantly opposed to the idea. Now even if it's not representative it is very dangerous for 90% of your most active and vocal (here on the forums giving feedback) players to be very upset about something that will fundamentally change the game from what it is into something significantly different.

Adding 3rd person view is almost the worst thing PGI can do.

With all my heart and soul - NO!

I think having 3rd person view is a terrible idea, just terrible. Being in 1st person keeps everyone in the same "playing field" sort of speak. When you have the option of 3rd-person, people are going to use it to view around things that wouldn't normally being possible in 1st-person without exposing yourself. I think 3rd-person also really takes away from the immersion aspect quite a bit. Not looking forward to having 3rd-person view. :(

Here here. This just is telling me PGI cannot make a game better than MWLL. Guess it will be time to go back and update that game once this garbage hits.

Yeah I have issue with 3rd person camera and I think people that want that need a good beating. Several times, until all stupidity is beaten out of them.

And if they do indeed force us to use 3rd person camera, well then I want a refund. I want a refund because I payed cash for a 1st person game, not some ****** 3rd person game. 3rd person view will destroy this game.

If PGI is actually worried about their new player retention then here is what they need to do.

STOP FORCING PEOPLE TO GRIND FOR HOURS IN TRIAL MECHS.

You need to coddle new players a bit. Not stuff them in the worst mechs in the game with zero progression for hours at a time. Its probably a good four hours before you can get in a half decent mech like a jenner and a bit longer for a hunchback.

Remember most players aren't all stoked to get a commando. :(
