My suggestion: Put in fully functional 3rd person until a proper tutorial exists. Then, later, dial it back down to where you can't fire or target from 3rd person.

I really want 3rd person. I'm one of the yes votes. I could not care less about playing that way, but it drives me crazy that we can't take screenshots without the cockpit and HUD, and can't screenshot our own mechs. Once we can repaint them, it will drive me even more crazy! Every time you guys post a screenshot of the week, I want to throw squirrels at you.

Did i just hear this right?! i was just told to 'suck it up' and stop complaining about 3rd person?!?! thanks for listening to the 5% of the community and not the 90%. I definetly will not be spending any money on this game, what-so-ever.

all i can say anymore is:

if 3rd person view gets implemented, i will ask for a refund of my founder money cause this is NOT what i was sold, i was offered to assist in a mech 1st person view sim, not an arcade mech shooter, we have hawken for that already.

I'm really disappointed. Do you know what is bringing people to your product? It is the fact that it isn't "dumbed" down. Cattra Kell said it best on the podcast.

Add a real turtorial area.
Add an info screen in the mechlab that warns of things like XL engines and ammo placement and CASE.

When there is a real tutorial with real help, come back and look at the feedback.

The only way I could ever possibly accept a 3rd-person view in a simulator is if it's a launched robot probe module that costs a bundle to earn and buy, can be destroyed and has to be activated. Otherwise, no. Plain no. And I've made it very clear how big a No this is. it's a deal breaker for me.

I am sorry if new players can't get it. It took me a few games to get it right and I still lose track in serious furballs. At times. But I always remember the "center torso" button is your friend. If you're confused hit it. May not be the best alignment at the time but you get your bearings fast. Learning to stop and center is an old mech pilot's basic training.

To change the game's entire basis, a mech simulation, is not what I envisioned or particularly am looking for in my mech game desires. I want the cockpit feel that I remember so well from the Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries days. I have plenty of 3rd person games I like playing, one of which is a direct competitor. If MW:O goes 3rd person, I will be a sad legendary founder.

I am truly concerned. No smilies concerned.

I may be the last guy to post, so I better make it good. 84 pages wow. I think most everyone in the community who even cares a little about this game took time to post about this.

My brief summary of having read most (not all, but most) of the posts about this:

F NO! No further explanation necessary.

If the idea behind third person is to ease new players into the game, it is a very bad idea. You are creating a handicap for the new player. They become use to third person and that is what they will want from then on. Switching to first person will still disorient them. Now you have yet another division amongst the player base.

There are better ways to do it. A better graphical representation on the HUD would be an excellent first step. Draw a circle with a v and an arrow. Have the v point to where you are looking and the arrow point to where you are running. Have the v always point forward. No third person required, just better HUD indicators. The way you have the HUD now is very unintuitive and hard to see in an intense fire fight.

Third person would be fine and maybe even preferable for spectator mode, which by the way is a great way to learn in and of itself. With third person spectating, you would cut down on the "You can't shoot, this is too painful to watch" comments in game.

One more and this is it.

The first time I tried to drive a stick shift I almost smashed in the garage. But wouldn't you know it the more I used it the better I got.

I wish Ford would have put a camera behind my truck on a pole so I could watch myself drive on the outside it would have saved me a lot of time...

I didn't read the 84 pages of replies. So I won't go into super detail, as I assume I'm not the first to voice these concerns about the idea of 3rd person. So, I'll keep it short with: I don't like the idea of 3rd person at all. This game is supposed to be a mech piloting simulator, and that needs to be done from a pilot perspective. Other reasons include creating a split playerbase, and just generally ruining the feel of the game.

I believe the issues with torso twisting and where you're looking as opposed to where your going could be addressed via a tutorial section, that could be run as often as a layer needs, to feel comfortable with it. Adding an entire perspective change, and a dramatic, sweeping conceptual change to the game to address a problem a tutorial could largely solve is a drastic, and bad, move.

The advantage that 3rd person gives a player is just a bad idea. for one reason it allows players to see around terrain and destroys the tactics of the game, please don't do it. make a playable tutorial to help them . don't divide the player base

Big NO from me

As a light pilot this would completely ruin the feel and fun i get playing one if people can see there backs then theres no catching people unaware, its possible to ambush someone not paying attention to their armor doll but i doubt even the biggest moron playing is gonna miss the stream of lasers tearing up his back, everything else has been summed up better by others and i will leave it at that

Haven't been playing long, but I think 3rd person view would be bad. Along with giving an advantage in view to those who use it, 3rd person would kinda break the immersion. At least for me anyway.

this sums it up. PGI and IGP, I am going to be blunt. THIS right here, openly states, by YOU and YOUR EMPLOYEES which are your public face, that the game will be 100% first person view ONLY. Then, Russ, openly states that because people are having a hard time learning how to play this game, they are going to pander to a small portion of the games populous who, let's face facts here, have NOT SAID ONE WORD via the forums on this. You are going to harm your public image, confidence in your company, which right now, with even the HINT of this is doing serious harm to your image as a trust worthy company that people COULD dump money into. There is a thread which I am certain you guys know about, that when I last saw it, has 2200+ people saying NO.
You already said you would not do this, now, you say you will. This breaks a CORE PILLAR that you set out way before we saw ANY footage that we accepted and wanted. We gave you our faith, our money in vast amounts, so large in fact that when founders packages went on sale, we BROKE the system with our enthusiasm. Now, you spit in our faces by openly disgracing yourselves to pander to a small portion, who, again, has not made itself visible to us and risk not only angering us, but driving us off in droves and forcing us to take our money elsewhere. Is this what you really want, because, even I who am not a business man, can see this has disaster and financial ruin written all over it. Please, show us that you care about this product, that you care about US your CORE players, the ones who have paid for the VETERAN, ELITE, LEGENDARY Founders packs, the ones who you know if you prove to us this is STILL a product worth supporting, that we will happily toss our money into your laps, but, to break our trusts to pander to the lowest common denominator, and NOT have proper control documentation or tutorials that we can do MORE than watch, and that are better done than some slip shod version of a "Let's Play" documentary.

We want to believe, we want to trust, but, right now, we do not believe, we cannot trust a company that has now, shown itself to be a company that is willing to break its own word and flat out lie to us.
