I've seen a few hundred posts and replies today about everyone crying that the champion mech only receives 5% XP boost.

Well I just got the patcher to come up and the first thing I saw was the champion mech with a nice little 10% boost sign right next to it. Is that good enough?

There will be plenty of other Champion Mechs to choose from later on, I'd not worry too much that this current one is the trial mech.

Hey, if folks want to buy it, then that is awesome. It's a revenue stream which doesn't impact game balance at all. Perfect.

Personally though, an XP bonus isn't really that useful. You'll master the mech, and then stockpile XP in it... Generally, CB Earnings boosts are far more useful, since the CB's can be spent on whatever. You gotta spend MC if you want to convert the XP on a mech after you've mastered it.

Well, TBH, while I don;t drive Dragons, and I don;t think I'd pay MC for a mech, I can see this move hitting home with folks more than hero mechs. Many cbill variants are in fact useful, and the MC price is actually not much more than the price without the XP bonus.

Its not for me, but I can see a bigger market for this sort of thing, particularly if they're included in one of those half off sales.

If you first answer "yes" to the question of whether GXP is worth spending XP on, then deciding whether to spend MC on a champion mech, or on XP conversion is sorta like buying a hybrid car. You may be spending $5000 more for the hybrid technology compared to the conventional option, but perhaps you're saving $50/ month in gas. So if you owned the mech car for 8.3 years, you would break even in this example.

I would have thought PGI would have made it that any mech you bought using MC instead (outside of Hero Mechs) would have come with this option, why make a whole new classification of mechs in order to introduce it?

as i posted in the other thread i think a lot of the champions will be done in a way like the dragon. It gets the community involved, it makes for solid trial mechs and give the casual gamer a "ready out of the box" mech that is useful but that they can paint and put camo on.

I see this being a Grind XP kind of mech.

Master everything (like me) waiting for the next mech to come out? This is the mech you'd take to build up your GXP with out converting MC.

Exactly.

Its a silly Mech all around, but whatever. PGI wants to make money (instead of making the Dragon Less Fat).

You need to take into account that the 10% extra XP probably also counts towards GXP, so faster pilot trees and out-of-chassis mastering clutch.

I was under the impression that it gave a mech exp bonus. Is it actually general exp or mech?

I believe 5 % was a figure stated earlier, seems they adjusted it up. Still doesn't look like it will be worth it.

The only appeal of the Champion mech right now seems to be you get a half-way decent designed mech instead of a stock config, meaning you don't have to pay C-Bills for all the upgrades.

But at 2250 MC or 12 $? Seems still pretty wasteful.

I fully agree with the idea. It doesn't break the game and it's just another form of income for them. Some ppl will like it, others won't buy it b/c it is not for them. Simple and elegant. I will like it even more if the community keeps their hand on it as well, supplying good mech builds to feed this new line. It makes it all the more acceptable.

Both. Because GXP earned is based on mech XP earned

Normally you get 50 GXP for every 1,000 mech XP earned.
With the Champion mech, you would earn 1,100 mech XP, which would give you 55 GXP

55 is 10% more than 50

OK that makes sense. In my opinion I think it really needs a better rate of GXP to be worth paying the MC for it, but I am sure people will buy it regardless.

We touched on this in another thread, was just thinking that the 300XL is one of the most versatile engines around.

You can use it to make good builds in many mechs:

Jenners
Cicadas
Trebs
Dragons
2 Centurion variants
Cataphracts
A couple of the Awesomes

And that is just off the top of my head.

If you are just starting out you get a nice mech ready to go. An XP bonus sees you racing up the pilot tree and you get a nice engine for use in other mechs.

Ok, it is not the best mech in the world (on that we are agreed), but slowly and surely they are working on the new player experience.

Being able to pilot this as a trial mech and then buy it for a reasonable MC price is one hell of a lot better than grinding dozens of matches in some rust bucket death trap stock mech.

Now all we need is that tutorial and some ELO tweaks and the new player experience will really come together!
