I've just recently gotten way deeper into this game than I anticipated I would, and it's all because of MechWarrior Online. I recently purchased a joystick with a throttle which I figured I could use for MWO. Then I heard that Track IR was confirmed for MWO, so I purchased that as well. So then I started looking around for a good game that uses both of those while I wait for MWO. I stumbled across Rise of Flight and I've been loving it.
The flight models seem great. And you're right, the graphics are awesome. I can run it on max with the exception of super sampling and my AA is on 4. The ground textures aren't the best, but other than that it's amazing. I love the damage models as well; how your wing will slowly start to rip apart and fly off, potentially hitting someone behind you and down them too.
I've just recently become a decent pilot (only in the single player world. Haven't even touched multiplayer). I've been slowly weening myself off all the aids. Recently started controlling the mixture and radiator myself. I'm working on spotting planes without icons, which I'm still not very good at. Once I see them I don't have a problem keeping track, but spotting them when they are far off is tough. The whole game is really tough actually. But it's so satisfying once you develop the skills to get a kill. Very little feels as good and rewarding as when you finally get that albatross to explode after chasing it down for five minutes.
Been playing the career mode a lot. Have 26 kills so far in my Camel and I'm a flight leader now. I highly recommend the game to anyone who's willing to give it some time.
