I am fairly new to this game, but have played Battletech and other Mech Warrior games. My only concern is to have a good time, enjoy the game, and customize my six off. One thing that concerns me though is the lack of strategic planning by pug groups. Most that I have been in thus far are pretty much run in die, die quickly. Anytime tactics are discussed, they usually fall apart ten seconds after the battle begins. Is the player base in general geared more towards a run and gun mentality or is everyone just inexperienced moreso than myself?

No tools for tactics and communication = no communication. One of the most basic tools should be identifying a specific enemy as a target. An arrow, a flashing target box; something?

Inexperience mostly. With smaller teams you usually have 5-6 that might stick together, and the other 2-3 running off on their own. This generation of gamers isn't as team oriented as many used to be 10 years ago. Once VOIP and C3 are implemented though, I think you'll see a lot more coordination, and you'll see it more often than not.

I'm a brain PuG myself and always take command when no premades are in. It depends on multiple factors, if you have bad attitude players you can't do much. Apart from that issuing easy commands and giving subtle hints works a lot better then planning in detail. I've got the most success where people are working together and try to pull in the same direction.

Saying where to defend and scout, telling them to use cover and dont go to X (rivers, or the crater on shutdown valley) works wonders. Calling people back, when 3 break of for a light mech capping us, or reapeating the request "1 med or light ceck base please" when noone notices or moves to defend the base. Reminding them to try focus one target down instead of opening up several 1 on 1 or 2 on 1 fights.

Also I'm not specifically targetcalling, it woun't work without faster comms (voice). People tend to ignore the chat in the heat of pewpew - I'll just give hints like "trial atlas-k is XL engine fittet, killing one side torso destroys it faster or maybe saying which enemy is severely damaged and should be dealt with quickly" when I see several assaults with us (so they may have one).

I already had games where one guy flamed me for the whole start of the match after playing mr cool guy and then he left because he didnt get his will. The remaining 6 listend and we stomped our enemies 7:2 (with basecap)...

My biggest piece of advice would be to get on one of the many TS servers that are available, or indeed apply to join one o the many teams that proliferate the game.

Many of us are casual players that enjoys one good banter and like playing with others that are willing to work for the good of the team.

Good luck with whoever you choose, and I hope to see you in game soon.

You also know what I think might help, being able to chat to players after the match is over. Sometimes you form bonds on the battlefield and you'd like to group up with them for the next matches.

Yes  I once found a very nice PuG match and wanted to group up, but somehow didnt get the names before it closed... They wanted to add me, but somehow didn't get it either.

TS sounds like a good choice, but due to an injury, my vocal cords are pretty much useless. At least until they heal up, so right now if I were on teamspeak I'd sound like the Godfather character from Generation Kill only much quieter, almost a whisper. So for the next three months, I'm pretty much silent, a fact that my wife secretly loves I think

Indeed, due to many variety of circumstances we have members that can't chat freely. Being able to listen is still a massive advantage.

Hope you get sorted, an good luck!

What injury? Judo chop to the throat? Eating candy from a stranger that had a razor in it? Swallowing a porcupine?

I find for the most part PUG players are learning that sticking together brings success far more than ramboing. The problem is that many can't stop sucking on that imaginary space buxx p-i-p-e long enough to actually play the game instead of suicide farming.

Strategic pubs is a contradiction in terms. Check out the mercs recruiting thread in this forum if you would like to find some good, tactical teamplay, and maybe make some friends as well. Cheers and good luck!

Also you have my condolences. I once lost my voice for almost a month from having taken an epee' blade in the throat competing in a fencing tournament. It fractured my larynx and took quite a while before my voice was normal. Only long lasting problem seems to be the loss of my singing range. (no great loss, TBH) I would offer up that the ability to listen trumps the ability to speak, most of the time

No it's not. I've lead many a PUG to victory only with text communication.

If you want a group that respects and uses tactical play, you're best off joining a group that does it. You'll get on voice comms and get to know some people and overall your game experience will just plain be better. There's a lot of frustrations with pugging that you don't have to deal with - and when 8v8 premade games are the norm, the challengers you face will be greater as well. Don't feel like you have to get good before you find a group to join - many (including mine) are happy to offer assistance to newer players.

As an old school gamer I can say that is utter baloney. I have been playing multiplayer games since late 90s and I can say with certainty that todays gamer generation is as team oriented and communicating as much as those in the past. I am not sure what games you have been playing lately to have that ridiculous opinion tho...

Voice comms improve the communication possibilities. But the will to communicate, work as a team and do what people with more experience and skill say... this is what matters in the end. And this can be done by chat.

Whenever I start a game, regardless of who I drop with, I always ask for a plan using the chat. Sometimes we come up with decent stuff, but about half of the time I get a response like 'Kill them all' or 'Win.' While a perfect restatement of the end objective, it's not actually a plan and I get the feeling that a lot of new players haven't yet grasped how important cooperation is to attaining a win. I'm not sure a lot of people are used to playing games with limited resources. A lot of online games are long attrition battles where you have virtually unlimited manpower and can throw yourself at the objective without much thought and expect sheer brawn to win you the day (see TF2 and CoD/MW).

Well for me as a new player its quite simple. Losing matches fast brings more cbills than trying to win them. Start a match, kamikaze run to the enemy and repeat with next mech. Looking at other trialmechs i am sure most new players grind their first millions that way. So as long as this mechanic doesnt change random matches wont change.
