What ARE these things, and has anyone else seen them? No one else in ZhiZhu can seem to see them.

I suggest:
1. reduce graphics settings in MWO
2. update graphics drivers
3. reinstall MWO
If neither of these steps fixes your problem, submit a ticket with your dxdiag and these screenshots, this may help track down some nasty bugs.
edit: you can submit tickets with files attached here.

But there's no trees near the hill side of the base. Judging by their size, I'm thinking they're supposed to be certain types of rocks.

I haven't had any changes to the game since the last patch. Haven't been able to replicate it either. But once I knocked a tree over on River City. O.o; Just kinda bumped it, and it fell over. Screenshot: http://s29.beta.phot...a/Tree.jpg.html
During the pre-open beta server stress tests, I was able to knock over several River City street light poles while everyone else lagged so bad they couldn't move. My computer was able to push through the lag, and I got to their base, captured, and won. Yay!
