As a long time Mech player going back to the 90's, I have all the MechWarrior Games from Mechwarrior 3 on. Having just found this online update, I was excited to see this being revived as I always loved the Mechwarrior series.
However, I mostly play OFFLINE. Yep, Offline as I would not be much use online to begin with. Why? Because I cannot use the Team speak thingy as I lost half my hearing when I was a kid.

So....I prefer offline unless.....unless this teamspeak has a Speech-to-text reconition software which I use at work when someone calls me.

To answer you question, there is no offline mode. As for not being able to hear, don't worry about it. Yeah its helpful to be in voice chat, but its not mandatory. There are plenty of players like myself who PUG all the time and don't have much time to type once the game starts to heat up.
