I have a CN9A with the standard 200 engine and ferro-fibrous armor. When I remove the engine in mechlab, the “dynamic armor slots” automatically fill into the center, right and left torso. Even though I have 14 slots empty on the mech (and plenty of tonnage available), the mechlab will not let me buy and equip an xl225-235 engine and gives error: “not enough slots available.” Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Apologies if this is a known issue. I searched for it but couldn’t find anything related. Thanks.

Are you able to remount your old engine?

Are you sure you have sufficient free slots for six dynamic armor slots to move out of your way?

Mount your standard engine and count how many free slots total you have in your mech (not the dynamic slots, but the actual number of empty slots). If you have 5 free slots or fewer, you will never be able to place the XL engine in your mech since it requires an additional 6 critical slots.

Further troubleshooting:
  • What is the exact, total armament/equipment in your mech?
  • Can you remove an item (such as a weapon that takes multiple crits) and then try to load the XL engine?
    • If you remove a weapon and add the XL engine, how many total free empty critical spaces do you have remaining?

Bonus: don't buy FF armor, it's very expensive to repair and it does not give you very much free weight. Endosteel will give you a larger amount of free tonnage and it does not drastically increase your repair bill.

I figured it out. I was being an ***** and didn't have enough slots in my RT for the XL. Thanks, Redshift!
