If I got a Cataphract CRF-4X would I be able to rock 4 Gauss Rifles?

No. There are not enough critical spots in the arms to support 14 per arm (7x2).

Nor will there ever be - 12 slots without actuators per arm or torso, so...

Yeah. To mount quad Gauss, you'll need a 'Mech with 4 ballistic HPs in four different locations- that is, LA, RA, LT, RT. Nothing else will do, since 7 crits per Gauss mean you can never fit two in the same location.

BLAMM! BLAMM! - Atlas down, a breach in it's front armor!
(80 Points of alpha to one single location every 2 seconds)

Edit: Yes, I know this would be horrible imbalanced. ;)

I don't even think a Fafnir or Direwolf can mount quad (U)AC20's...and those are big *** 100tonners...

In Mechwarrior 3, I once fitted quad gauss in an Direwolf. I one/two-shotted everything. With tonnage it's possible, but I don't know how many crits a ultra AC/20 has exactly.

Clantech, basically. That's about the only way.

(It's responsible for more overestimations of what you can do in MWO than anything else, I think.)

Yeh if I remember right, Clan UAC20 and Guass were lighter (don't remember about crit space).

Now imagine a Cata with quad UAC2s or RAC2... that would be pretty nasty. lol

I like my current Dakkaphract with its dual UAC/5s and dual MLAS. I think I have 10 tons of ammo for the UAC/5s, so ammo shortage is not an issue. I tried the 2x UAC/5 2x AC/2 build but I overheated too fast for my liking and I didn't want to save up for DHS to make it work. As it currently stands I have a heat efficiency over 1.3, which is just great.

I think the 4X is great.

There is nothing sub par about 4xAC5 or 2xUAC5 2xAC2/5. There is nothing sub par about dual Gauss either.

My personal favorite so far has been 4xAC5 on chain fire. Heat is rarely and issues, and most targets back off due to the massive shake they are getting.

The slow speed is less of an issue with the ballistic heavy 4X. Ballistic weapons are very hard to use at high speeds so going slow is fine with me.

The major downside all the Catas is the huge profile. You are a Heavy with the armor of a Heavy but the hitbox of an Assault. And with the 4X if you get any part blown off you are down by almost half damage.

I made this today. Delightfully silly. Not the best mech I've ever piloted, and I'll probably be looking for some more well rounded way to tweak my 4X in the future, but I'm having loads of fun with it. Stand a few hundred meters behind your front line Assault mechs and help them bully the heck out of anything big and slow that comes near em.

It's all fun and games until a Jenner decides to make a cozy home up your butt.

One of the guys I run with has this build and it really chews through mechs. If your aim is good, I would use this build over a 4xAC2 build due to the ability to overheat quickly. It's easy to get carried away with those 4xAC2s!

The DHS is essential for making the 2xUAC/5, 2xAC/2 combo work with the heat gen. Stay at range and give it a whirl!

My problem with the 4X is four AC/2s, 4 AC/5s, or dual UAC/5 + AC/5 are your ONLY options. You can't do anything else and still use all 4 ballistic hardpoints, and if you're not using all 4 ballistic hardpoints then there are much better models and mechs to choose from. Aside from the 4 ballistic hardpoints you really have no other options. 2 energy hardpoints in the center torso and a missile hardpoint in the head? Total joke.

So far my favorite is 4ac5 with a 1 large laser. Endo and DHS a long with a XL 225. Never has to worry about heat and has just amazing damage output.

The energy/missile weapons beg for being your short-range secondary battery- twin MPL's and a Streak rack, for example.

I'll also say the dual-Gauss -4X isn't a joke. The extra 5 tons makes a difference- I can strap a Gauss on each arm, 60 rounds, and a pair of MPLs for backup and get a brutal piece of work. I feel sorry for the guy who thought he was safe when he jumped up a hill, and I just brought the main guns up and cored the poor fella in mid-air. The wider field of fire really does make a difference vs. the Gaussapults we're used to seeing. Alternatively, pack a single large laser or twin ML's + Streak for extra reach, depending on how close you want to be for fighting or general taste.

You can also go with a triple mount rather than a quad one. Triple AC/2-AC/5's is nothing to sneeze at, and the -4X is one of the few designs that can pull it off without putting them all in one single location- and you can use the tonnage from not mounting gun #4 for energy/missile secondaries.
