exactly that what possed them to use a engine that hasn't been proven wasn't fully tested wasn't ready for this kind of game. They had to know it would have caused massive issues that would drive there playerbase and publisher crazy with delays. Seems like the unreal 3 engine would have been the right choice it is tested vetted and throughly implemented and trusted buy gamers. I really hope your getting that engine for free since it is costing you tons of money from having to focus on it insted of your game. *at least i hope that is why.

Somewhere I read that Cryengine is for free or really cheap to license if you want to make a F2P title. That might just be the whole reason.

Because the CryEngine 3 is actually pretty dang good, believe it or not, and the Unreal Engine 3 is starting to show its age.
As much as I love UE3, it still has texture pop-in like no tomorrow, and it is cheaper to license now then back when PGI first started developing but I suspect the reason are much the same the Natural Selection 2 team, and Interstellar Marines teams both passed it over in favor of their own engines.
And look up Star Citizen's tech demos, for another example of what the CryEngine 3 is capable of.
It can be a very system intensive engine, but it is also far more optimized than the previous CryEngine, I'm pretty confident that the issue they're having with it will be hammered out in time.
EDIT: Almost forgot the MechWarrior 5 was planned to use the UE3, and did so in its tech demo. So I['m pretty sure they worked with it enough to use a different engine for MWO. *I do realize neither game is related, however they DID work on MW5, and DID work with the UE3.*
